Log in Screen Character cooldown timer.
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:49:13 am »

It would be useful for the Log In screen to have a character cooldown timer so you know exactly when it is safe to log your alt toon etc.

Not game changing obviously, but it makes things easier if you forgot to note the time etc. I am no expert but it doesn't seem hard to implement in the text box, displaying a message each minute.

Makes a pluss for alts. I say no. Altough I have a crafter alt myself, I still don't support this idea.

The need for specialization, the lack of things to do at level 21, etc. creates the need for alts.

I don't see how this can be considered a bad idea.
You still have the 10 minutes cooldown for relogging, only difference is you see it on screen.

Rather than that Id like to see a specified number of minutes when you try to relog, like "4 minutes remaining" instead of "you need 10 minutes to relog" for 10 minutes

Right now people with multiple accounts are helping test FOnline's bugs better than people with a single account, so unfortunately you can't really complain yet.

Once the beta is over I would love to see,
One account per forum account.
A validation email sent out randomly in 1-4 weeks of account creation that must be replied to within 72 hours or account will be deleted.
If you log into a different account from the same IP address you will be asked to contact your room mate to log on for a multi account test. If test fails, both accounts deleted.

For now a timer would be fine I guess.

Which will lead to more forum accounts.
The 72 hours is impossible for people with a social life as it would mean it would be on hold for 1-4 weeks + 72 hours max.
It's currently already easily possible to bypass an IP-check, what makes you think it's difficult once out of beta?

Suppose it would be possible to limit the amount of accounts per person to 1.
What do you think the consequences will be?
I think we'll lose almost 100% of the none fighter builds.
Personally I'm in favor of limiting the number of accounts to 3-5 at some point.
If you think it's too much, consider it for a moment:
- sg/bg/ew build + a crafter to support it (can be even more if chosen for both burster and sniper)
- leader
- thief/lockpicker
- doctor
- HtH
- taxi
- bomber
- repairer
- and probably a few I forgot

One character per player (or even two characters per player) isn't going to happen in this game unless two changes occur:

1.) S.P.E.C.I.A.L., Perks and the skill system are tweaked to allow characters to be good at two or three things, rather than good at only one thing or mediocre at three or four things (as it is now).

2.) "Respeccing" existing characters (i.e., reassignment of stats, perks and skill points) is implemented, perhaps for a caps fee or on a long cooldown.

I can agree with opinion that alting helps now to betatest the game...

I totally disagree with opinion that we need alts forever, because its not true... the reason there are mostly fighting chars (and other chars only as alts) in this time is that game is not supporting any other kind of playing than PvP...

why? you want to have fighting powerbuild? ok have it, but deal with consequences like you cant do anything other... you want to learn more things? ok you can, but deal with it, that you can do more things, but not perfectly...

There's simply not enough stuff to do in this game with just a single character, in my opinion. People need variety. Part of the point of the original games was playing through many times to try different characters and strategies. That's what the original games were designed for, and FOnline uses basically the same items and skill system from the original games.

You're even MORE limited in FOnline, since most skills need to be pumped up to at least 150% to be useful at all. You could have a bunch of 100% skills in the original games and do PLENTY of stuff without failing all the time. Case in point: Repair; apparently if it's not 180%+, you're better off not even trying to use it (and that's with a Super Toolkit). Same goes for weapon skills. In the originals, 90%-100% was fine through most of the game, 120%-140% were fine at endgame.

Perhaps if PvE gets dungeons and explorable areas (rather than watching a red dot walk in circles on the map), and if gathering and crafting are expanded and made more complex, then you can limit people to just one character. As it is, gathering, crafting and PvE are fairly simple and limited — which is fine, I think the devs have done an excellent job making basically an online version of a single-player game, but it needs expanding.

In short, this game is mad fun, but only if you get to experience all it has to offer... unless it's expanded in the future.

but man... do we both speak english? It is completely what I was saying in my post... this game right now is supporting mainly (/only) PvP... yes, you can play other way (trader, crafter), but all the time you will be raped by fighting chars (PKs)... for my experience of the game (about two months) there are many PvP events, but where are some others? And yes, you can organize your own events, and I am trying to do this, I was even giving quests to some new players to get caps faster than shoveling or carrying crates... but for whole experience I remember just one non-PvP event, which was Battle of the Scribes... (when I dont count Izuals riddles)
So it just depends on the way the game should go... if it remains PvP only, then you are right... if there will be more non-PvP-doable content, then your argument is invalid ;)

I'm quite sure I do. How 'bout you? :P

Anyway, I knew perfectly well that we both agreed on certain points when I created my post. However, either way, my argument isn't invalid: In the game as it stands, you can't reasonably limit people to one character (or even two) unless you allow them to do more things with that character, and also tweak their stats if they screw up.

If the game is expanded substantially, as both you and I have touched upon... then yes, one character might be viable with the current strict system of character creation/advancement.
