Questions for the devs.
« on: March 27, 2010, 07:45:39 am »

What direction are you going here with the game?

From the time of the wipe, the only major updates have been to prices and exp gained, mostly from crafters, but also with the addition that barter skill has no use if an item is on the NPC's list. That, and making gathering more difficult.

I'm not quite understanding what you're doing here, and I'm just wondering. I was fine with the junk and electronic parts being more difficult to obtain, electronic parts are easy and junk's not that hard to find. Crafting was generally not much harder than it was before, with the tweaks here and there.

Everything was good and all, but then today there was a patch to lower the EXP gained from crafting, DRASTICALLY.  But the crafting times.. are the same?

Was the idea to just make the game generally more difficult? Or.. What? That's my question here.

[Smallrant] Do you know what most people are leveling up on right now? Avoiding encounters. You get like 60-110 exp for avoiding an encounter. That's as much as crafting ammo which takes a lot longer.[/smallrant]

i think it was to make it so people who fight stuff to get exp also... not just sit and craft all the time

I understand that, Blarg, but you also have to remember a couple things;

  • Before you can get a gun, if you aren't a melee/unarmed/PURE COMBAT centered character, killing things can be difficult. I.E. Crafting characters that don't have combat skills necessary for the profession.
  • After level 5, exp from kills drops off harshly. Scorpions net me 25 exp, hounds net me maybe 35 at level 7.

Most people will not have the health, or weapons required to fight Deathclaws or Centaurs, ESPECIALLY crafting characters. So... Where will they be gaining exp now? I know I know it's more difficult now, but it doesn't seem balanced anymore. Now it's more focused on combat characters than it ever was.

You aren't supposed to gain XP, you should roleplay whichever level you have now. Take it like a man...  :)

I'm now level 9 with a crafter AND PvP character. He can craft his guns and go fight mobs with. Since the wipe, I didn't have problems for XPing with crafting and farming mobs. Now the XP for crafting is lower.... well... It will just take me more time to be level 21 and that's it. The only difference with many players is that my team have a base, so I can craft safely. And I started at level 1, with no stuff, nothing, like everybody. If you can't handle that alone, then search for friends who will help you.

This man understands. Its not crafting *or* fighting critters, its crafting and fighting critters (and doing quests and little from FA and all the other sources).

Crafting has gone down from 30% 0f prices to 20% of prices, but it isnt as drastic a change as it looks, to quote myself from the changelog

Quote
Whinners please note:

Prices have fallen, amounts of ammo crafted in one go have changed, relative value of ore, minerals and alloys have fallen because we have introduced their advanced versions. So 1 ore before the wipe does not equal 1 ore after it.

Looking at the current rate of xp gain.

Before the wipe:
Level 0 - Crafted @ $3k an hour - xp @ 30% of prices = 900 xp an hour
Level 1 - Crafted at $3.3k an hour - xp @ 30% of prices = 990 xp an hour
Level 2 - Crafted at $3.6k an hour - xp @ 30% of prices = 1080 xp an hour
Level 3 - Crafted at $3.9k an hour - xp @ 30% of prices = 1170 xp an hour

After the wipe
Level 0 - Crafts at $2k an hour - xp @ 20% of prices = 400 xp an hour
Level 1 - Crafts at $3k an hour - xp @ 20% of prices = 600 xp an hour
Level 2 - Crafts at $4k an hour - xp @ 20% of prices = 800 xp an hour
Level 3 - Crafts at $5k an hour - xp @ 20% of prices = 1000 xp an hour

What has actually happened is a change to the rate of crafting to differentiate the higher professions crafting speed a bit more (this helped reduce the massive timeouts for the really expensive stuff), the rate of xp has fallen from 30% to 20% (a change which should've happened months ago but couldn't because of incompaitible versions) and many prices have decreased by a lot (so xp from the same item looks a lot less, but it is infact a lot closer percentage wise over an hour)

The rate only decreases to 44.44%, 60.6%, 74.1% and 85.5% respectively. Really not that great a fall.

Price of 50 shells is 480. This *0.2 = 96. This *0.3 = 144.

You are still getting 69.4% of the xp you would have got ... How does this hurt?  :-\

wait wait no way... you claim that before this update there were 144 exp for 50 shells? I swear yesterday I got something between 300 and 400 for 50 shells, and certainly 300 exp for 50 10 mm ammo, so it does hurt, however I see the point of this change and this is OK. maybe I had a bug

The xp at the start of the wipe was unchanged from before the wipe (I'd forgotten to get the legion of slaves who edited crafting for me to do it).

So that 420xp was for the old system where you got 100 shells at once and at a higher price ($14 each compared to $9.6 each now).

$14 * 100 * 0.3 (the old rate) = 420xp
$10 (rounded it up for ease) * 50 * 0.2 (the new rate) = 100xp

ok i get it thanks, but still it is the pain in the ass... as to porduce the same amount of shells I need three time resources as before wipe, however I see I got more resources from reworked timeouts it is OK! But please answer me one question- how do I get my XP now? Is the point of these upadtes to slower the rate of getting exp? keep more people under 21 lvl? Or will you finally make more quests :) ?

More quests were added on the wipe and more will be added after the wipe. Other things for xp will come a long too.

Great I love you guys! It took me sometime to realize none of your updates are nonsense... Once again thanks for the junk lying on the streets (scavenging at least!) and for new loading screens (lovely!) I am fine now, no more questions...

Maybe the idea is to make more valuable chars with 21 level? I know that on calculators it seems nice and easy, and it could be so before the wipe. In Ultima Online it takes AFAIK about year or more to fully develop your char.

New in-game content is never enough :>

Well, this is kinda awesome. The xp from crafting is so shit, i rather walk around world map with 40% outdoorsman and get xp from discovering encounters. Thats faster. Aint that easy to lvl with FA too. Well, killing creeps? Yeah, right, decreasing xp with each kill. Well, maybe il manage to get lvl 15 until the next wipe. :/
