Need help, find Luna Blacke in NCR. I don't have too much to spare, but I will at least help you get a tent...

Definitely get working on the beginner quests in the safe towns if you don't want to die.  You can do a couple in NCR to get armour and a bit of starting cash right from the start.  If your small guns skill is less than 40 you can get +15% to it and a free gun in the boneyard.

As has been said earlier the first few levels are a bitch.  After that you may be able to take more than one or two hits so it gets a bit easier.

I never survive more than 2 hits... :X Then again, with miniguns / rockets / crit hit to the eyes.. I'm not sure how many I expected to take.

You just gotta know where to go and when to go. When I head to NCR which is an obviously safe town I head there at day to trade items. and when it is night time I head to the dangerous areas to grab some resources like junk, wood, fibers, pelts and head to my tent and wait till mornin' to start selling the stuff I have. Once you get the levels up and your outdoorsman is at 100% you rarely get in those dangerous encounters and start rakin' up some caps.

In fact this game is optimised for big factions.

If you are a lonely player you are restricted to NCR/Junktown/Hub (SF is too dangerous outside).
