Is Steamworks even a valid option? After all, we don't own the Fallout IP nor are we allowed to do anything fancy with it. Also, if I am not wrong now, VALVe decides who has access to it anyway. You can't simply put your game on Steam, that's not possible.

VALVe doesn't accept games that make absolutely no income even if it is free to play (see TF2 - the game is free but you can buy items and stuff for real money). As donations purely go to the server maintaining that doesn't count and this game will no way be added to Steam. Also, we might have some problems like no fancy launcher. However, this could be a good way to get rid of alts - one Steam account is one FOnline char.

Technically, within a wipe or two they planned to link characters to forum accounts, so no need for steam.

I don't think that is correct. There are plenty of free games that are available on steam, Games that have no microtransactions taking place. I.E. not making any money. I'm pretty sure it is a possibility provided that Steamworks can be successfully integrated in.

That "dumb moneymaking system" Is what pays for all the services Valve provides. It's actually very intelligent.

First, because of VALVe. Second, because Fallout is not ours. We can't release it on whatever buy/sell plattform. Bethesda lawyers for sure might have something against it-- also VALVe. Beside, you have to own Fallout 2 in order to play FOnline (legally), so this would need to be connected. We can't provide all files for download. /Edit: Also you can't simply download Steamworks. You have to contact VALVe, show them the game, talk about all the legal stuff, etc. pp. It's part of a partner system, after all.

I remember dozens of mods for the HL/HL2 engines downloadable on Steam / Steam-Works-able. Maybe its because of the fact that HL/HL2 engine is owned by VALVe, but maybe try it that way as Steam-supported mod? Only playable when Fallout2 is bought (F2 is avaible on Steam). Would encourage the purchase of F2 through Steam and maybe pleases VALVe and Bethesa. Of course the .dat files wont be downloaded when installing Fonline2238 via Steam, but a dialog pops up that lets you choose the location of your Fallout2 folder in your Steam-directory for the usage of the original .dat files or even automatically find the path to F2 in the Steam-directory (the installation paths are always the same, you can't alter them).

"because of valve" is not a reason at all. That really just doesn't cut it. Please be more detailed.

As far as valve goes, Of course you have to contact valve and work it out with them, They aren't going to allow random people to put up games as they please.

 Maybe i didn't make myself as clear as i could have when i first brought up the idea, You have put my idea into perspective, A steam supported mod was what i was getting at. Thanks

Once again, Bethesda has nothing to do with this.

The problem with the .critter and .dat could be fixed pretty easily, Especially if you have to own fallout2 through steam. A small script could automatically locate the files for you.

Give me an example. As far as I can see, all the games there have *optional* microtransactions (Alien Swarm is an exception due to it not being updated or anything).

I was going to zing you (jk) and bring up Alliance of Valiant Arms. I have since found out that it also has micro-transactions. Looks like i was mistaken. Thank you for pointing that out! I should get back and edit my last post. ha ha ha.

FOnline is not a mod though it look like one... It's an engine made from scratch using copyrighted files from F2 and copyrighted universe of fallout (owned by Bethesda I think).

It still doesn't matter as we would never get on steam due to VALVe money making system. As long as we don't add anything like 5$ for 50k caps about which 2$ go to VALVe we can't get FOnline on Steam. Even if we do add such a feature (micro transactions) we get sued by Bethesda and get our asses fucked.
