Is Steamworks even a valid option? After all, we don't own the Fallout IP nor are we allowed to do anything fancy with it. Also, if I am not wrong now, VALVe decides who has access to it anyway. You can't simply put your game on Steam, that's not possible.
one Steam account is one FOnline char.
Chi si ritira dalla lottaE' un gran figlio di mignotta!
Technically, within a wipe or two they planned to link characters to forum accounts, so no need for steam.
VALVe doesn't accept games that make absolutely no income even if it is free to play (see TF2 - the game is free but you can buy items and stuff for real money). As donations purely go to the server maintaining that doesn't count and this game will no way be added to Steam. Also, we might have some problems like no fancy launcher. However, this could be a good way to get rid of alts - one Steam account is one FOnline char.
It doesn't matter much, because as I stated previously, FOnline is not going to get on Steam due to VALVe's dumb moneymaking system.
Steamworks can't be integrated. It's as simple as that.
The technic isn't the problem, it's the law. And I don't mean the rocket launcher.First, because of VALVe. Second, because Fallout is not ours. We can't release it on whatever buy/sell plattform. Bethesda lawyers for sure might have something against it-- also VALVe. Beside, you have to own Fallout 2 in order to play FOnline (legally), so this would need to be connected. We can't provide all files for download. /Edit: Also you can't simply download Steamworks. You have to contact VALVe, show them the game, talk about all the legal stuff, etc. pp. It's part of a partner system, after all.We tried to get 2238 on Desura, but currently this is not possible, because of technical issues (out of our hands).
I remember dozens of mods for the HL/HL2 engines downloadable on Steam / Steam-Works-able. Maybe its because of the fact that HL/HL2 engine is owned by VALVe, but maybe try it that way as Steam-supported mod? Only playable when Fallout2 is bought (F2 is avaible on Steam). Would encourage the purchase of F2 through Steam and maybe pleases VALVe and Bethesa. Of course the .dat files wont be downloaded when installing Fonline2238 via Steam, but a dialog pops up that lets you choose the location of your Fallout2 folder in your Steam-directory for the usage of the original .dat files or even automatically find the path to F2 in the Steam-directory (the installation paths are always the same, you can't alter them).
I don't think that is correct. There are plenty of free games that are available on steam, Games that have no microtransactions taking place. I.E. not making any money.
Give me an example. As far as I can see, all the games there have *optional* microtransactions (Alien Swarm is an exception due to it not being updated or anything).
I don't see where Bethesda comes into this, They do not own the rights to fallout 1 or 2. Only the rights for making future games in the fallout universe....Once again, Bethesda has nothing to do with this.
Of course you have to own fallout 2. In an earlier post I even mentioned that for this idea to work, the downloader would have to own fallout 2, Potentially making Interplay like the game even more. As far as valve goes, Of course you have to contact valve and work it out with them, They aren't going to allow random people to put up games as they please.
Bethesda owns everything Fallout. Interplay is only allowed to make Fallout Online and to get money from selling Fallout 1 and 2 and Tactics.
Show me an example where this has happened before-- a mod that doesn't use the source engine and is not connected to any VALVe product. I don't know any, but maybe I am wrong.
They don't though. They don't own fallout 1 or 2. Since when is it illegal to mod a game? That I can't do. I thought there were some, But I was wrong. At this point, I am seeing that Steamworks is not a possibility. It would have been pretty cool though.
