Increasing skills with training
« on: July 01, 2011, 06:59:13 pm »

A thing that wasnt in the original fallouts, nor in "3" or new vegas, is the fact that shooting alot with a gun makes you learn a little how to keep that gun. One of the few things good things about Oblivion is that: so, since is not that incredible magic or so, you thing that it could be implemented? If not, why?

But in Oblivion you raise level by raising your skills, there is no xp.

Now what you mean, is raising level would give more HP and perks but skills would be gaining by using them only?

Good idea, though I would strongly recommend you to describe your suggestion in a more comprehensive way. It's best to try to predict all possible violations, to exclude the comments like the Perteks did (no offense, I just don't like to see comments like "THIS IS ABUSE!!!11one OMG!!!", instead of saying that the possibility of abuse exists, but I can suggest this and that to avoid it.

Concerning the suggestion itself - together with planned changes (like an ability to increase some skill or to get a perk via quests) it would make sense, because it is reasonable enough and could make people have less alts. In this case everybody wins.

Happy you like it. Basically my idea was that skills (with a limit, let's say a total of 10-15% for level) could be raised by using them. I dont know, maybe a skill point every x-*roll a number between 1 and 100* uses? I hanvet tought to a true formula to calculate it, however i dont think this is too imba or impossible to do. So, Concerned Wastelander, dont worry, i'm not suggesting of using Oblivion's level system, but to add a chance of learning how to repair-build-shoot by just practicing a little. After all, half of characters in Fallout learned their skills in that way, teorically.

Are you kidding? The levelling system in Oblivion is one of the worst (amongst so many other) flaws in this game. How people can actually like this way is beyond me. If this'll be in 2238 ( doubtful that it will, ever ), then enjoy watching people shooting each other 24/7 with BB guns to raise small guns skill, or just set up bots to do the shit for them. Truely a haven for bot users.

Surf, i'm not saying to change fallout's leveling system with oblivion's (i agree with the fact of it being one of the worse), i am just suggesting the possibility of increasing a little skills with practice. And, as i already said, it would be VERY limited (10-15 % max each level)

I remember playing Morrowind and jumping instead of running cause, well, it was pumping my 'jumping' skill. Didn't really like it though.

Everything that one can do to raise a skill, will be done by the majority of players, up to the limit that's set. The thing is, if they will inevitably do it, then make the process at least funny. So we should better focus on other areas where at least some fun could be achieved.

mini quest bonuses (not like gunrunners, need something that will actually involve player activity - a mini dungeon perhaps??) would seem more appropriate than say shoot x amount of times to get chance to raise skill y by 1% up to a max of 15%. however if you did want something like the latter than i would rather a smaller bonus such as 5 - 10% max since majority of levelling would be done with combat so even if you have to shoot 1000 times to get a 1% increase people would probably end up achieving that anyway.

in Advent Rising you leveled your weapons and power skills by using them and unlocking alternative ways to shoot them, i remember jumping instead of running too to have level 5 acrobatics so i can charge=jump, dodge faster and do amaizing combows

aniway this will only make imbalance, only combat power builds level sing guns, but the other ones use quests, so they will be in advantage... again

so, a bid NO

Well, atleast someone likes that. Obiviously it is a little imbalanced, even if im not saying 15% each skill every level. No, it's a total of 15% (better 10, you're right) between all skills every level.

In Morrowind and Oblivion i made a self-damage spell to increase my skill and level up my mage, so i know what you are talking 'bout  ;)

And yet you don't see the flaws in this system?

i bet this thing wouldnt make people require alts... (unless if SPECIAL doesnt allow something)... but yeah, after few months of playing, youll meet people with all 300% skill, not cool..

Now, apart that implementing or not is a dev's choice, i already said that in my idea it would be very limited (a max of 10% or around it between all skills every level) so that one, to reach 300%, would have to do only a particular thing in his life. Wait, this would add the problem of specialization...

So i've mistook your suggestion, you mean to have it at potentially every level being able to gain skill (up to 10%) through use of it?

Then this potentially means a large proportion of the player base and combat alts no.1~2133654 will just grind it out or as surf has stated in an earlier post, set up bots to do the hard work for them just to get that extra edge in combat.
