Welcome to HELL.  This game has soo much potential ruined by the times you will without a doubt spend walking back from the spawn point and attempting to rebuild all that you just lost.  Also be aware that sometime (not soon but not too long) there will be a wipe and Poof everything will be back to square one.  Some tips.

1.  Don't carry anything in a 'guarded' down that you're not willing to have stolen or taken from you.  (unguarded towns shouldn't even been seen by you for LEVELS.)
2.  Tent like Mic and others said, most important thing you can get, ONLY safe place in game.

3.  Trust NO ONE you encounter in the wastes 'random encounters'  It's a sad reality at this point but you're more likely to lose what you got than to make a new friend.  Does that mean shoot everyone?  NO, but running is always an option. (even at higher lvls)

4.  Lastly of the big non-common sense area, Take everything around you with a grain of salt.  If someone is offering you something cool in Old Town, or in the wastes, well that 'cool' thing is probably a high powered rifle bullet to the head.  If you get up the nerve to not be an ass in game and try and help people, tip 1 applies.  Don't take anything with you, you're not willing to lose.

So welcome to the game of work hard to hide everything cool you got, walk around with trash gear, and dodging lulzers.  Best of Luck.

P.S.  If you end up getting your teeth kicked in and want a hand, pm me on here, I got some stuff I can give ya to help out.

Welcome to TROLOL Online.  Of course the great many trolls who kill you for stupid reasons will try to justify their actions with "wasteland is harsh".  In all honesty, next era things will change drastically and hopefully the LULZY folks will do other things instead of fuck with noobs.

1.  Make a miner dude/money guy.    Focus on outdoorsman skill as this will save your bacon MANY times.  Go to city tiles near boneyard.  Go to a city tile and enter it to find junk and hope it has no bad people.  Then use the junk to make BBs.  Camp the vendor and save your caps to buy brahmin hides(hope you don't run into some lulzy folks who trick you or kill you while travelling).

2.  Use science skill on 10 hides at a place you like and it will make a tent only you can see with a place to stash stuff.  Then go rinse and repeat junk/bbs/camp vendor in boneyard till you have desired caps.

3.  Then actually make combat or fun alt and have money to get him stuff to go kill molerats.

But this is obviously abusing these are suposed to be safe places, towns with guards and they just sit in front of them when guards are 20 meters away and camp you just when you enter the town even before you get your game loaded to react, make this a 10 second immunity when you enter the town or something i dont know, this is unplayable,i cant force myself to go to the desert for god knows how many times and when i come to the city happy to sell things and finaly get my first caps i get banged.

Btw i cant get inside vault city because i need to have caps and the guy in outer city dont have any caps, so i am grounded with this idea.

you can stay in courtyard, or you can become vault city citizen which is free if you do things right.

You have to learn the difference between troubled towns (Gecko, Klamanth, Redding, etc.) and actual towns with guards, like VC and NCR.  The populations vary, and there is little to protect you in any town except the NPC guarded ones. VC is indeed nice, it has some nice shops as well as a guarded bank requiring membership (though banks are still FUBAR aren't they?).

Frisco is a great place, imho, and even at low levels, I would reside around the area, though it was dangerous due to the strong encounters there.  The amount of shops there, however, is a great plus, and I just generally loved the area and the few quests.  Another positive is the train there, which takes you to Adytum, which is another guarded area that sees few players but has several locations with not-too-difficult encounters.

Starting solo is difficult. You have a lack of information, resources, and have to generally face everything without knowing anything, including other players. "Is he gonna shoot me?" Assume yes, though this is paranoid to hell, it serves well as enough people shoot noobs for the lols.  Don't carry worthwhile stuff into towns, or rather, don't idle with them.  Get a tent soon as possible (which itself is a feat, as getting 10 hides as a low lvl can be quite hard) though asking in nice towns can often get someone to help or just give them to you.  Do not rely on this though.  Never rely on generosity.  Begging just makes me not wanna help you at all, though I've often ran off and gotten hides for noobs... well, just because.  I had the hp and means, they did not.  Gathering ten hides is immeasurably easier for me than them and its a bit of a linchpin to enjoying the game and starting a hoard.

Find a nice town that fits you, hopefully with people you can get along with, make a tent, and try to do something you enjoy.  Avoid the 'free' (Towncontrol) towns because militia is just a tool gangs use like hitmen.

the person who is the first to shoot, is the person most likley to live, keep this in mind
tell that to my victims, i became a pk because most of the guys that i randomly found shot me at sight, fortunately im enough stronger and i was mostly in TB, so i begun to kill they, and i take pleasure.
In my first time i always talk nicely with everybody i found, im still doing it if people dont shot me first and there is a conversation motive.
