road between cities?

To be honest, I don't see how this would make barter more useful. Also I don't really understand how this should work. Many small and empty maps which include some street? A fixed travel-line with higher encounter chance? There was a time, where players talked a long talk about too many encounters.
If you can meet other players there more often, this streets will be camped by people who like it to shot other.

Barter skill would be made useful if you added functional traders, like the ones seen in F2. Besides, the shops in towns have nothing more than mausers, junk and other crap. The gear they had could be randomly generated and could include even the most unique stuff (a luck roll perhaps?).

- exactly, in such places players would move around the map faster and would be a little bit safer. As far as raiders are concerned, well, maybe I did overreact a bit, they could be seen from time to time. The roads could be marked on the map and both caravans and patrols could be met only in those zones.

- and by people who like to shoot the shooters I guess ;)

In my opinion, it is a great idea, but as stated before if everyone is fighting on this road no traders would come. What I would suggest would be to have serveral roads or dirt tracks go through the mountains, this could add to the role-playing aspects and an alternative to the main roads. obviously there are many aspect that could effect this, for example more raiders hiding in the mountians, and small rocky shacks that could follow te ideas on the previous page.

I like the idea, however it's also possible to extract the map picture and mark well passable areas as routes.
I think the devs should just modify the terrain without releasing a new map and let the players find out the best routes or unmarked encounters for themselves.
Encounter maps with road remains and/or gas stations could be added in such terrain (like city ruins location type). Gas stations or car wrecks could be scavenged for parts, junk, various pre-war stuff or canned food (technically like fruit plants)
As for the encounters and traders, i suggest adding brahmin cart shops with a description.

I like this idea, but how are the players supposed to react with each other, like in an old inn or motel at the road, when they are random encounters?
Just an example, Player 1 wants Player 2 to visit the motel he found in order to scavange it and to stay at night there. Player 1 is wielding a radio, Player 2 also.
Player 1 says: "Dude, I stumbled upon an old building, used to be a motel I think, there has to be some food in there, come here, quickly!"
Player 2: "Ok, where is it located?"
Player 1: "It's the old highway, west of Broken Hills hidden in the mountains!"
Player 2: "Ok, I'm coming!"
After several hours of searching, Player 2 yells" Lol, you pwned me, I can't see shit!!11111" etc...
