Here's the build I use for most of times, (It has also awarness, and 2 lol traits as bloody mess and good natured)
Instead of pyromanics I would use brd's, but this is just my own opinion after playing long time with those broken perks.
It can craft armors, small guns and big guns, level 2 profession of each kind, got eaten bunch of lol-bps such as lsw, rocket launcher, metal armor mk2 etc.
It can do most of things alone, unless doing PVP, then it is shitty, and then - alt madness starts if you want to do MORE in game.
Another character I would just do would be SG + EW / BG + EW hybrid for farming guns and armors, and the last would be Slaver or Thief, then you can start doing PVP alts, because anymore are just obsolete, I would never go for finding BP's beacause this is job for no-lifes and I do not wanna spend it searching for stimpak bps.
The idea of having starting character is great, but now just obsolete, Better make 3 specialised character's as Krupniok says, than one "woodsman" alt, sorry, but 2238 showed it's logic there and if you want to be more economic you NEED to do it.
That's sad but true one, I won't argue what is fun for others, but for me it ISN'T making hoards of alts.(but meh, that's just my opinion).
(You can also do the "snake eater perk quest" at level 9 if you have first pyroamnic or brd, that makes you kill those nasty scorpions in one hit, because I failed to do that quest lolo).

If I had to do a starting build all over again I'd do a hybrid between my repairman and dedicated TB farmer (see above).

You will be hunting solo/or in a team turn based with M60 (using nuka cola and super stimpacks; ciggarettes optional). You will farming mainly NRCA & Vault Patrol. I'd only do BOS farming in a team ( as you will need dedicated m60 farmer to do it alone a hybrid like this might get you killed if you get a forced encounter due to low OD).

Vault patrol and NRCA have insane knock down (as they use huntings and sniper rifles). This is where bonehead and quick recovery comes in handy; you basically need enough HP and super stims to stimpack yourself each turn and live another day and quickrecovery with bonehead will get you there (just make sure to kill the big gunner in first turn by 1 hexing him with x2 bursts from M60 when you initiate combat). The Nuka Cola will give you 12AP = x2 burst per turn. Cigarettes is also optional but not necessary for this build.

The repair ability comes handy in repairing those looted CAMKII's and M60's

Support perks
Awareness;
Best of a Bad lot;
Mr Fix it;

Drugs
Nuka Cola - which will be stolen from SF Asians by your dedicated thief (your second char)
Super Stimpack- stolen from BOS by thief.

BG hybrids are nice but I still think it'd be more confortable to start with a SGer, as it'd be easier to get gear from Khans, and then level a BGer. Having to use flamer all the time until you can grab a different weapon sounds unconfortable.

Alternatively EW would be a good choice imho, start with laser pistols and then use laser rifles in your first Unity hunts.

Thats why hybrid with BG/EW is far better you would think for starter, with a bit of luck you can kill unity patrol fighting rogues and have the first laser rifle/rocket launcher to farm other unity patrols, then you get a tons of shit gear from them that you just won't be carrying about all the stuff.

But using two combat skills requires spending skill points that could be spent on other skills like outdoorsman, repair... I think it's better to use a rather "crappy" hybrid first and then moving to better builds, unless you really want to stick to one character, o at least use that character for farming all the time.

If you really need a hybrid to start with, AdolphbinStalin's one is a really good one. I would change only some things - if that's a starting build, I'd take Small Frame instead of Chem Reliant and max out Agility to 10 - even such a low-tier drag as Nuka can be hard to get for a newbie, and the Carry Weight will still be at acceptable level. The next thing is that rather than Doctor - which won't work at 45% - I'd tag Outdoorsman or First Aid, at least you'll walk a bit faster or heal a little more.
But it really depends on your playing style. Overall, that's a good build - it will never become obsolete, you'd be able to use it in TB farming as a 2x burster or even at some minor PvP.

Small frame is also viable, but it means you wont be able to take home most of the loot when you are fully geared up; unless you dual log a second char ( I know this because this is what I do to support my dedicated farmer with extra stimpacks + to carry off loot). Albeit Small frame means you can add x1 extra point to luck to make it 5 to avoid bypass; as Bypass from BOS will get you insta killed, and even bypasses from NRCA/VP hurt and flaw you to the floor.

I think 10 Agility is a waste in long run. The thing is you will need a dedicated sneak (probably the second char one makes), for super stimpacks. As hunting NRCA, VP, BOS etc. without super stimpacks will likely get you killed (if you are doing it alone). Once you have thief you simply steal Nuka Cola from San Francisco NPC (they all carry it it inventory). It's very simple to get. And of course super stimpacks you steal from BOS encounters.

Doctor will still work at 45% to heal the odd cripple. You don't need first aid as you are using super stimpacks (they heal much more then 45% first aid will and waste less AP). I suppose you could put it into OD.

To add, the third char should be a slaver for caps (or one can start with slaver as first char). Unfortunately in this game one needs multiple chars to succeed.
