NPC traders don't want to buy my stuff
« on: November 25, 2012, 08:22:03 pm »

Hi.

I'm just coming back to the game after 2 years away and I am having a harder time trying to gather caps now.

It seems the NPC traders just don't want to buy the stuff I want to sell.  They offer 0 caps for leather jackets, stimpacks etc..

If I raise my barter will the NPCs give me caps for the items or not?

thanks in advance

Traders most likely now want to buy ammo(SEC, MFC, 10mm, etc.) and caps from you, and that's how you buy stuff from traders...

To make decent caps, sell spears/gecko pelts, you get like 50 caps per each to a person who buys them in certain cities...

Use "Science" on leather jackets to obtain silver gecko pelts and take stims to doctors.

Yeah, all of the items should have a trade value in my opinion... It just makes money making a huge bastard ha.

i also started playing again after 1~ year and its quite problem to get get caps.
shopkeepers dont have any.
was trying logging in in 6:00 in the morning (cet), for few days, to get some caps to buy professions and there was none.

also its very hard to find the right shop to buy your item.
for example - flamethrower fuel. i found out that only shopkeeper in vault city wants to buy it and he dosnt have any caps usually.
m60 - didnt found shopkeeper whom to sell this. tryed ncr, sf, gun runners  and hub.

devs should do something about this, expand npc buy lists and increasing interval when shopkeepers get caps. because this way crafting is not encouraged.

I think a simple supply and demand curve economy should be utilized, the shop keepers should only have very basic items in stock, and a decent amount of caps replenished every cycle of xxx hours.  If item stock on hand is low then they will pay (relatively compared to base price) high for new item from player.  If item stock on hand is high then they will pay progressively lower (to not even buying the item) from player.  This is called demand side economics, its not that hard now is it?  Merchants would be "local" so enterprising individuals could go to other towns to pick up shipments of low priced guns (idk, gunnrunners comes to mind) and make a tidy profit by delivering them to SF just as an example.  Why would gunnrunners have low cost weapons, because players are apt to produce guns right there and sell them therefore driving down the price of guns in that locale.  I think this would propagate a useful relationship between mining, crafting and bartering.  As all three now seem to only exist in ancillary roles.  Also I think only 100/100 items should even be on merchants, none of this shitty broken down farmed equipment....  I know I don't go to the store looking for a leather jacket 19%/39% so why would any merchant buy one from you?  Or have broken shit in his store to sell to you?  100/100, make crafting somewhat useful and profitable.

I believe (or at least, i hope) that current barter system is not working as it was intended too.

The idea would be to be able to barter crap items against other crap items or (very) few caps (if any), and not being able to barter crap items against high tech stuff (no more 10 000 bbs against plasma rifle). That would make noob items easily accessible (read: makes game more "new player" friendly), but high end stuff would be still difficult to obtain without good crafting or team farming.

The problem is that right now you are not even able to barter crap for crap.

i hope barter will be fixed/changed soon TM

Happy Harry's in Vault City will buy m60s.

With your demand side economics, even 100% leather jackets would be worthless most of the time. L.J. is about one of the easiest things to craft or farm, so if the merchant has one in his shop and it doesn't sell--he's not going to buy more to resupply.

I think a better way would be to have the Modoc tanner and the Adytum blacksmith pay a flat rate for raw materials, such as gecko pelts and hides (these would have other applications besides L.J. in the economy: shoes, tents, etc.). Make it so they won't value anything in barter below Leather Armor MK 2 or Metal Armor.

This idea could also be taken one step further with crap guns, like 10mm and Mausers. Instead of having merchants buy these, why wouldn't they buy the raw materials that crafting and base-building players consider valuable (metal parts, alloys, and junk)?

The best way, in my opinion, to get the good weapons is crafting w/o violence...

Yeah, but the new system doesn't help newbies liquidate their low tier gear any better than the old one. Personally though, I think there's less of a problem with the current system being "broken" and more about newbies not being educated on the merits of selective farming. There's also the fact that much of Player-to-Player trade is either raw materials and high level manufactured weapons & armor--or drugs and ammo. Why not have more of the in-game values aligned closer to what other players will pay?

...that's pretty much what a free market economy (another nasty term for supply and demand, it's just not a theory, it's reality, what a mind blower!) is.....

I guess we sort of agree then; though there is the matter of retail vs. auctions, lowballing, and etc. One of my favorite examples is junk, since you have base-builders often paying 20 caps per piece and in-game of course you can get something like 50 caps per 2 junk in the form of spears.

This is why I think the boneyard salvagers should pay more than 5 caps per piece, it should be more like 10 or 15 (Imagine them having a spear factory and sending shipments to Junktown). Setting a market standard in-game would also help discourage the rip-off offers for junk in the WTB section.

ok, i have a question about shopkeepers:
according to wiki first 2 traders in SF deal with small guns and energy weapon, BUT when i come to them they dont want to buy any of my small guns or energy weapons i wanted to sell to them! why is that?!

only thing i could sell to them was plasma rifle and energy cells.
