Thief Flagging system
« on: May 16, 2011, 12:25:32 am »

Wow this game is great!  The player base is horrible ;(  All I see is noob thieves run up and steal something in LITERALLY 1 second, no way to avoid it and even being hidden in Stealth will not stop them.  And there is no flag in place to hit them and thus expose their crime.  This is horrible, really ruins the game.  I have played many other games that have thief class, and there were checks in place so they couldn't just NO skill come up to you and get something.

There were weight checks, and the chance they would get caught, but this has NEVER happened.  I don't mind the cloaked gankers that one shot you while you salvage for metal, that is at least a part of the game.  The Steal ability in this mod is WAY..WAY .. WAY .. and I can't put enough WAY's after this , OVERPOWERED with NO penalties or draw backs.  The worst I imagine is you die and 1 min later you back to annoying people.

And when this is happening to all the new players, there is no wonder the player base will never get beyond 100.  I think this is the game that all the trolls must come to to roost.  Ultima Online in the olden days had less ass-hattery, and that is saying something.  I keep debating if I should even invest any more time in this game, as every experience ends with a one second steal that is unavoidable.  If you log into a city with someone that is trying to get your shit, you are going to loose it.  And you can't even retaliate... that is pretty lame .. really really lame...

THIS is how you thief ...

Not the fail system they have here.  If I can be assured they understand it is totally broken and overpowered and it is being worked on, then great.  If I am told this is how it is working intended, I guess there are better things to do than waste time in a system like that.

didn't it use to show <thief> above a player's head? guards didn't shoot them but everyone else did.

Wow this game is great!  The player base is horrible ;(  All I see is noob thieves run up and steal something in LITERALLY 1 second, no way to avoid it and even being hidden in Stealth will not stop them.

Stealing takes more than 1 second. Being stolen from is easy to avoid. It requires you to play attention. In this game, you don't trust anyone!
Tip: leave NCR.

And there is no flag in place to hit them and thus expose their crime.  This is horrible, really ruins the game.  I have played many other games that have thief class, and there were checks in place so they couldn't just NO skill come up to you and get something.

You can tag them red.
Without skill you can't steal. Try it. You need at least 220, but 300 is better. Pickpocket perk is required.

Without Pickpocket perk you're much more likely to fail when stealing heavy objects. Also caps are harder to steal.
Being stolen from is 1 of the easiest things to avoid in this game. All you need is to pay attention. If you call it overpowered, than so is it's countermeasure: walking away.
If a busted thief comes back after death, (s)he should be unprotected. Also suggestions have been made to prevent thieves from coming back that quickly.

This is my 2nd session. Both in this session and the previous session, the player base decreases when it runs for a while. It will probably be higher after the wipe. It also depends on when you're playing. It's the busiest in the late afternoon and evening CET time.
Stealing requires opening someones inventory, check it, drag an object to your inventory, choosing the amount if it's a stacked object. It takes roughly 3 seconds depending on how fast a thief is.
You're expected to pay attention. You're not really safe anywhere. If someone comes running towards you when you're trading, or comes standing next to you, break of trading. It's most likely a thief. Keep at least 1 hex between you and anyone else at the trader. Watch people's behavior around a trader before you trade.
Leave NCR to avoid roughly 85% of all thieves.

Not that much of a difference from FOnline. With the exception that it seems like you can take stacked items without having to chose the number.
In FOnline if you fail, especially in NCR, you're likely to get killed by players. And in order to keep the stolen items, you have to leave the map. That's impossible if someone shot at you due to the combat timeout. So it seems harder in FOnline than in that video.

Once more: leave NCR!

Yeah I got robbed a couple of times, always when I'm talking to merchants, and then I got killed by guards when I attacked them. It really sucks for new players losing what little eq they got in a supposedly guarded town. If atleast known thieves could get blacklisted and had to go to reno, or they would be unprotected.

Yes. Simple and clean. Unprotected guy was red tagged and everyone knew it was safe to shoot him.

so let the things clear: if someone failed to steal from you you can draw your gun and shoot'em. Even inside NCR or Junktown
but not when they succeded
isn't it?

No, if he was talking non-stop, everytime I was tagged I was simply shouting that everyone is idiot in NCR and noone would see my tag while escaping town through bazaar full of people, so it wasn't perfect.

Also strange that topic with such huge desription in 1st post went so far.

Still, that system didn't have any caution to it. As soon as a player stole from one person, the whole town knew. (Not to mention that they thief/blocker could type constantly to avoid the (thief) from popping up, but not the point)

If that old system were to be brought back, the (thief) sign should only be visible to the person that was actually failed-stolen from (and maybe people within X hexes), not every single person that didn't even see the crime happen.

well i am one of those who liked the flagging system. My bet would be that it was removed because people keep doing fake shit like using lockpick on other person and then wrote /s (thief) what resulted in many innocent people death, its just my guess anyway :>

Do we really need this? Tbh when i spot a thief i just shout it, so his job is kinda over... thieves are not overpowered, so why nerf them more? And i don't even have a thief alt, for who would think it :p

If you're shouting about thief, it won't change anything, only sociopathic murderers in NCR will run to him to check with push if he is really protected or not, and they usually will never risk, and of couse that thief won't stand on same place, he'll atleast walk, so checking will be impossible, so saying name of thief is useless because noone believes you, because there're always shouts about someone not protected everyday and of couse it's not truth. Also if you shout that you're not protected, noone will believe you even if you're really not protected and want to die.
