Quest Noticeboards
« on: March 26, 2011, 08:31:19 pm »

I caught myself wondering how many of the game's quests I'd actually completed, or was even aware of, so I came up with this: Ingame Quest Noticeboards.

The game world is so big players can't be expected to talk to every NPC in the dozen or so towns to discover quests. Instead, we put a hint regarding every single quest on each town's noticeboard.

Just stuff like "A printed note is stabled to the board. It says "The NCR Congress are looking for people to fulfil a secretarial role. Contact Feargus for further details. Pay negotiable."

I know it would be nice for players to discover quests for themselves, but what good's a quest if only ten people do it?  The amount of time it takes to write/script/check quests, the more people experience them the better. The only way people can find out about half the quests right now is by looking them up, and I figure the less players have to rely on outside sources the better.

Thoughts?

Actually a really good idea, gives these things a use finally, and your arguement is valid for sure.

Definite yes, my good man.

It's prepared already, just need to be filled up.

So this suggestion is what the billboards are meant for?  If so cool.  If not maybe this wouldn't be a bad idea to add to them along with whatever else is already planned.

Oh, beautiful. In which case, I would suggest you rename them notice boards, or employment boards, or something similar. The word billboard conjures up this image:

Rather than a noticeboard for employment.

Edit: I've got a boring night in on my hands. Give me the go-ahead and I'll write these myself.

Sure, if you want to write stuff for them, you can.

But keep in mind, it's not meaned to have every quest on it... Like the one with Busters cigs in the NCR, which is pretty stupid to be on that board and removed on the next update. Also various quests like the tanker in Klamath cannot be on such a board due to simple logic (it's kind of a semi-secret quest and Meloy really would not announce it).

Right now, we have billboards in the NCR, Hub and Adytum.

I get the logic behind not announcing the Klamath tanker one in particular, but I'd point out that many players probably haven't just 'stumbled' across it - they've either known it was there or not.

I think a little vague nudge ingame couldn't hurt - maybe just some graffiti on the board that says "[Somebody's scrawled something over an old notice] What are you HIDING Meloy?!". Doesn't beat people over the head with it, just gives them a little prod in his direction, and the rest is up to them.

As long as it is reasonable, I don't really mind. It just has to have it's logic and not feel forced on. And I think at least some kind of exploration should remain in the game, else we are just one step ahead of yellow (!) over npcs heads.

Sure thing, I'll try to keep it tasteful. Want me to do it for any other towns too? I can't imagine Redding or Modoc taking too long.

Yes, but you are still in world where NPCs all look the same, so giving some clues is necessary.
And to be honest for fresh player some introducary quests should be obvious - just like F1 "travel to V15" or F2 "temple of trial"

Looks good to me for the most part. Will make it into the game with the next update.
