Casinos - Let's jump the Shark
« on: March 11, 2011, 08:38:35 pm »

They've got to be doable. It's keeping me up at night. I have dreams, people. Dreams of a neon paradise.

My underworld contacts have informed me that soon casinos will be guarded. As such, I want to see if anyone's got any visions on how to make gambling (the activity, not the skill) worth engaging in. These are my thoughts - I want to see if we can try and realise what would and wouldn't work, and maybe end up with an interesting new feature.

PvP Gambling

I can see gambling working easily if it's PvP. One player loses his money to another by playing dice or poker or whatever, and the other player gets to keep it. Maybe not even interactive, just a "You play a hand, and managed to lose $100." to keep it simple. 1v1, once again, to keep it simple. This would prevent the game's economy getting screwed up too, as it's just one player's loss and another's gain. No idea how you make it entertaining, though.

Solo Gambling

I like the thought of this - slots, blackjack, whatever - but I can't think of a way to prevent players bleeding casinos dry. Unless the odds were drastically in the favour of the casino (which they actually are in real casinos, which is why real casinos are so profitable). Thinking about it, would that work? If we make most players lose at the Casinos, surely the Casinos will be able to be self sustaining?

Why we should ignore Gambling/Luck in determining success

People will just alt it, sadly. 10 LK 300% Gambling alts will just throw the system out of whack. Maybe if high Gambling skill just increased the stakes you could bet at when playing alone, but the odds were still the same (and against you).

What do you guys think?

One player wins another money the other player shoots and kills them...gambling in a pvp town wouldn't work out very well.

Hmmm. Maybe a way of depositing your winnings into one of your bank accounts via an FLC representative so you don't get gunned down the minute you leave the Casino. Maybe an option to ask one of the bouncers to "Let you out the back door", which just dumps you into the Worldmap. Maybe a player specific 'Casino Chips' var that increases as you win, and only becomes a material item (caps) when you 'cash out'. Or a combination of all of these.

As for getting shot/eyepunched -inside- the Casino, I don't know. Same with bluesuits hanging around inside the Casino using Steal. Actually, no, for that I'd suggest you have to have at least $100 on you before you're even allowed in. Not sure what else. Anyone else got any ideas?

i know way to remove problem  ;) in rl casino (like we see in movies  :D) when u win - u get shooted by casino guys. so make a limit for win (random limit) u just can get shooted when go away from casino, and make non lootable corpse in casino and nearby casino doors. (more that 20k win - instant death, or etc.)

I'm not sure how many times you've been to the casino, but casino security guards don't shoot you if you win money.  You realize that would be murder, and illegal.  Even if you win a jackpot, you won't be murdered by the casino.  You'll be payed out by them.
You're ridiculous.

How can you relate 30's movies to a post apocalyptic world? You start killing off winners in the casino, people stop going to the casino it MAY have worked back then in a world with easy transportation and thousands of people coming in every day but in a post apocalyptic world where most of the population is gone and travel is much worse a casino would rely on repeat customers which are those that live there. They win a large amount and get murdered, rumors spread casino dies.

People HAVE been in real life kicked out of casinos for winning #$% loads, maybe because they cheating ? I dont know,
just make it so when that 10 luck 300% gambling guy comes in, wins a few thousand, and is asked to leave and cant gamble any more for a set time.

EDIT:  OR if you really want to simulate real casinos, make it so the more money the casino loses, the more the games are rigged in their favor.
Casinos do this all the time, whenever they want to make a little more money just rig the slots to pay out less, etc

or, limit how much you can gamble in a day- and make it so the games where you can bet big bucks have less chance of winning, so even with 10 luck 300% gambling, so even if a pro gambler comes in is still only likely to win maybe a few thousand before he is done, make it so you can gamble maybe 10 times, and put cooldown

Why didnt you put this in suggestions ?

They were winning enough to put the casino out of business. Casinos are business estates, and businesses are about making money.

In that case, your hand is a dead mans hand :D
That would give a nice western feeling to gambling, but I doubt weapons would be allowed in NR casinos...

I can't think of any gangster movies that are about casinos (and have casinos doing shady things) except Casino (1995) when towards the beginning that dude gets his fingers broken.  In the 30s, there really weren't big casinos (as we know them).  Sure there were gambling halls, and card rooms, and things, but the big Las Vegas style casinos didn't pop up until the 1950s.  And the mob ruled casinos didn't last all that long, since they're profitable enough legally.

hmm you have a lot of good points, maybe someone can capitalize on 1 or 2 of these ideas?
they sound like they would really work, implementable, and balanced.

Shit, I like the idea of constantly adjusting odds depending on how much money the casino has. It also encourages addictive behaviour - "I've lost 1000 so far, so I'm way overdue for a payout!"

Also, yeah, I wouldn't object to this being moved to Suggestions. I intended it to just be an overall discussion on Gambling/Casinos but it's definitely developed a much narrower focus.
