Author Topic: To allow players which are using same radio channel to meet each other on World  (Read 7595 times)

Or just craftable flare? If you use it and drop on a map, the chance of being found rises.

could have both, radio for alerting specific people to your location or emergency flare to alert everyone nearby. Maybe the flare could start a signal fire for making smoke.

So...

Let's imagine this idea is used by a PK gang - dozen of gangsters, all 21st level killers and armed to teeth - to lure the inexperienced or lone-wolf players, miners or even smaller gangs by calling for help, and when their prey joins encounter, bringing them down easy.

Or channel spams? Someone who doesn't need help at all could spam the channel "for fun", making other players angry. Trolls are everywhere, they even spam the GM channel.

What about such issues?

In a day or two, nobody would use this feature anymore, and all work would be in vain.

Depends very much, imo. It can be a useful feature for gangs who are using their own radio channels. If you run under 22435 and you friend too, he sends a radio signal and you get his position. I personally don't see much problems in it. Of course, if you are using public channels with many people... but this is your own risk then.

Also these location marks would be removed after you have left the map, which makes it not possible to form nice images on the worldmap.

This is your job as a developer. You're supposed to make your game resistant to idiots, and not let them shit all over an idea that has had the most universal support.

If you're frustrated about other features not being used, you've not made them worth using. If you've created a feature and nobody uses it - is it the players' fault? No. Why rent a room for 500 caps a day when you can make a more secure tent that lasts forever? It's time to go back over a lot of these old things and actually think how you could make them popular. (Brahmin trading, bounty hunting, room renting, there's probably others)

Given Radio channels can be a possible 5 digits, thats an awful lot of possible combinations and factions would have a certain amount of security when broadcastingion their posit to allies. Other faction discovering their channel and ambusing them would just be another form of espionage and cant say it would be particulary easy to obtain.

Yeah. I wanted to check a radio before I used this argument to see how high the frequencies went. I doubt any faction is going to sift through every possible combination. Even if they find a channel someone normally uses, they may not even be broadcasting on it at the time. And even then, it would require some decent knowledge about whoever you're trying to ambush. If someone said 'COME HALP I AM BEING ATTAKED', just asking 'Who are you?' would cause it to fall apart pretty quickly.

Too many extraordinarily unlikely things would have to happen for an ambush to happen, let alone be common. The most people could do is dupe new players on common channels.

Minimum radio frequency is "0" and the maximum is "34463". So if it's not fake there are 34464 channels, and the probability to catch signal in simple case (one player, one radio) is 0.003%. Most frequencies are useless, but if you use smart number it's still hard to get encounter. Besides it would appear for few minutes.

There could be SOS button, what would work only in active slot. If someone drops it/puts into the equipment/dies/toggles it off the encounter location disappears.

I and my gang would use it in PvE.

Sounds good to me, but an Outdoorsman of 100 shouldn't be necessary. Maybe a little lower.

Of course, now that I think of it, fights wouldn't last long usually, especially in real-time, and the person might not even get to them in time if they are more than a few blocks away. But it could work for just relocating each other without having to get together again at a city.

Isn't that the same at Modoc, Den or Klamath or every significant crafting location?
The player has to outsmart the PKs with experience, strategy, teamplay, right timing and perhaps some patience.
Concerning locations in Wasteland, you can get a hint in message box, a "town preview light", depending on your Outdoor skill and Perception points. "This place smell like death."

Very, very thank for all messages and fast work of developers.   ;D

Love it. If you want people to use radios, give them abilities that IRC channels don't have.

Yeah, part of me thinks doing it via coordinates would be easier. Hell, how about if any two players enter the same square in the map they're guaranteed to encounter each other? Or if they pass by each other while travelling?

And yeah, I think combat is too fast for backup to work. Unless we gave doctors defibrillators (shock paddles) to bring back their buddies if they get there before the replication timeout. I like the idea of emergency medical teams/radio channels. Hell, even good samaritan groups helping out people on a public '911' channel. And then getting ambushed by PKers. Damn, that sounds fun. I now want to be a heavily armed wasteland paramedic. Turning up, guns a-blazing and electrocuting people back to life.

I am all onboard for emergency 911 channels :)
