My main problem is, I can't seem to make any money at all. Can anyone give any helpful advice on how to make money?

if you can't find merchants with caps, try selling ammo or something else to players, on forum in trade section

most easy way for caps as a beginner is to make BB's out of junk. Or go 1 space below military camp near ncr and look masters army vs ncr army battles

Make your tent just outside of Adytum.  Then craft BBs and camp the shit out of the merchant.  The more often you check the better chance youll catch him with caps.

I just discovered this. Btw, why cant I cut down tress? It says the primiative tool can cut trees.

its works only on certain maps and trees

you mine ore by using a sledgehammer on piles of rocks in mining sites. Mining sites are little locations near NCR, Junktown, SF i think too, Gecko, also inside BH and Redding.

you can equip sledge and switch to ''use on'' mode or hold click on the stones and use the sledge from your backpack

If you want to get rich go near the BoS base and wait for a patrol vs mutants. You'll get all the miniguns, laser rifles, rocket lunchers you can eat. And ammo.
If you need caps find some wood, junk and flints, make spears and talk to a girl in junktowns workshop.
You can buy spears with BB or some other crap and trade the spears for caps.
Once you have 1mln caps go to a bank, and never worry about caps (on all alts) till wipe comes.

I actually play Fallout 1 and 2 on a regular basis. This game just uses a different game style then what I'm used to.
