Horrible, just horrible.
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:05:18 pm »

here is a chronological list of my experiences in FONLINE

Starting out with first character, usual Fallout 2 build. Grab some items, yay free stuff! Leave the area and head to gecko, on the way there I encounter a caravan so I speak to the caravan leader. "Don't Get to close!" *bang* shot to death while dialogue window is open.  :'(

Respawn north of Adytum, do howitzer quest, feel confused, that was a quest? Okay, so I'm a messenger, that will be my profession I guess. Leave adytum, encounter two groups fighting, one group wins and loots the others' corpses. I notice that they missed one so I walk over and grab a stimpak 'OOH YEAH' I think 'I'm FINALLY getting somewhere!" "DON'T LOOT THAT CORPSE" *bang* shot to death  :'(

Respawn by broken hills, head into town. Shovel poop. See another player! OMIGOSH! the first time I've seen another player! They walk over and use something on me, i guess they tried to steal from me because afterwards they ran off. Okay, I guess people aren't friendly in this game... continue to shovel poop. Get bored. Go buy leather jacket. Oh shi- I look totally bad ass, oorah, lets go travelling!

Head towards klamath, hopefully i'll get lucky on the way and pick up some stuff.

I get lucky along the way! I end up with a revolver, 5 extra rounds and a knife! Shit yeah! Small weapons is a tag skill so i feel pretty good.

Encounter a lone traveler being attacked by dogs, I decide to wait and watch. The lone traveler is severely wounded but she manages to kill all the dogs. Tough shit i say and shoot her in the head, reveling in my evilness. She survives... 'oh wow' i think 'lucky i have enough AP to shoot her again.' She survives the second shot and stabs me to death in the next turn.  >:(

Respawn in Klamath. Shovel shit. Get bored. Read manual, realize I've made my character all wrong.. dammnit, ahh well.

Yay that was annoying, okay new character go! The guide says shovel poop... okay... uhhh... i just did that and it kinda sucked but i guess i'll take their word for it, i mean it's fallout 2, my favourite game of all time.

Screw shoveling shit, i'm going exploring!

Oh wow this character is going much better, 10 gecko pelts! broc flowers coming out my ass! flint everywhere! shit yeah! I only had to quit and load the game a couple of times when it froze but now i'm going to be rich! I head into town to sell my stuff.

Hit by rocket at town entrance before town even loads. -99 health and all I saw was a black screen.

okay... no noob protection.. or even 2 seconds of invulnerability to compensate for ping when entering areas... ahh well can't fault a player for taking advantage of a flaw in the game.

Respawn by Adytum

one hour of running away from encounters, sneaking around towns and becoming increasingly more bored and frustrated with this game but holding out because i loved fallout 1 & 2 later, i'm cornered in a building with another player outside...

"hi" I say..

"fuck you" he says

and shoots me.

"..cunt.." i say

to long didn't read version:
Played FONLINE for four hours, never got past level 1. Never got any items. Never got any cash. Did boring messenger quests. Only player interaction was being stolen from, sworn at and killed. Died countless times. Spent one hour dealing with glitches.

Can I sign up to a mailing list that will let people know when the next server reset is? I feel this game could be fun, but right now it is most definitely not and I won't be wasting anymore time with it.

inb4 waztelsand iz harzh, if that's the first reply you thought of then fuck you. I love difficult games, but this is just retarded, if you want any new players you're going to have to tone it down.

Well, as far as I can see you didn't read wiki's page about beginners, and didn't try to complete lots of quests either. At the very beginning, where you spawn, there's a quest giver, but I guess you missed it. And yes, this game is incredibly hard if you just go to play it without reading any advice. As QLang said, persevere  ;)

I play since the last wipe.
Eventhough I screwed up 1 character rather seriously and a 2nd partly, I managed to get them to level 21.
I'm currently leveling a 3rd, which isn't even a real combat character.
Yet I have fun and am enjoying myself.
Hard? Hell yeah!
Fun? Hell yeah!

It's hard, you get killed in numerous ways.
You will encounter, critters, thieves, player killers, etc.
You will however also encounter good honest people, although they kind of a rare breed and hard to find.

First priority in this game: get a tent.
Once you have one live comes considerable easier as you can store all your stuff there and travel without the risk of losing stuff.
Personally I would advice to go to and stay in NCR till you have 1.
With the things you get for doing some minor quests and with the shit shoveling, you should be able to get the cash or goods for 10 brahmin hides rather quickly.
You should also be able to get to level 2 fast that way.
Beware of thieves.
Once you have a tent, you can travel.
You could do some small quests and the ones that give good xp.
You only have 1 chance for some quests.

okay.. calmed down and tried again.

first up, had to delete my second account because once again i messed up a 'build'

made new character

Got quest from leeroy, Walked into VC.

witnessed what I guess was a hacker (named rusty) walking around being shot by every guard in town and taking no damage
while I was watching this I was pickpocketed by a fellow blueshirt.

"Someone tried to rob you.."
for fucks sake i think, is anybody in this game not an asshole? i decide to punch the guy.
"you missed"
"you missed"
"you missed"
At this point the guards turn their attention towards me

the thief says: 'WTF LOL!' and then loots my corpse.

playtime: 3 minutes.

might persevere another day.

That very scenario happened to me, too.  Then again, another time someone failed robbing me and I was given a nice, big, red message that said

"someone failed to rob you"

Which I took as a license to kill... you know what?

It was  ;D

Ok... So.  My little story now, so you know you're not alone.

I'm wandering through the desert and get beset upon by a grue.  Doesn't matter what killed me it's not important to the story.

So I regen right next to Vault City.  My tent, with all my backup gear, is way down near The Hub.  But I've heard that Vault City has a train station.  No need going past all that space in-between, I just need to get the train, and I'll be able to take the train down to Adytum and I'll be that much closer to home!

So I get to Vault City.  But I'm broke.  I figure it'd take 60 shit-scoopings to even get into town, and I don't have all freaking day.  I notice two people in Happy Harry's in nice looking gear, and I figure I might ask them for help.

Girl: "Awww... you're begging for change?"

Me: "Yeah, shitty ain't it?"

So she drops some caps and a hammer, telling me about the mine nearby.  And as I'm typing thanks, some guy comes in and takes the stuff she dropped!

"Hey!" I say, and block the door to tell him to give it back.

And a guard shoots me in the back, then walks away... leaving me at -15 hitpoints

"...fucking guards..."

A second guard runs into the door at that very moment and shots me in the head.  Blood is flowing everywhere now.

"...i'm beginning to hate this game..."

I didn't mention walking out to the desert to stop playing and having a random encounter inside the green triangle after i had stopped moving, then for some reason the game loading 'realtime' instead of turn based. Killed in seconds by marauders, just as I was finally feeling accomplished. Lost my nice leather jacket, and a hunting rifle.

Also a pack of cards weighs almost 1kg. What's up with that?

lol dude it's just like fallout 1-2 remember how hard that game was? think of the save/reload feature the same thing as dying and respawning.

I hate to say it but the wasteland is harsh and without a tent you can't store or keep anything for more then a few hours since we all always die eventually. You need a tent man badly, or if you want why dont you think about joining a gang? They normally help out with equipment and xp. And i can promise you that with your own gang base dying is nothing, its just another trip to your base.

Best advice we can give you however is to check out the guides online. Don't trust anyone. Don't stand still in towns and don't let players touch you. Stay away from NCR and the northern towns. Your best bet is to hang around Junktown and The Hub, they are the most (more or less) safe towns out there.  You might want to remake your character with the thought of what you want to be at level 21, plan your perks in advanced. Things like that... just go out and cruise the forums you'll learn from our bad experiances lol.

Btw for the record lol I was that player giving out that sledge while some russian came up and stole it lol. I hate to say this but i'm also probably that same guy that told you off then shot you... it is pretty funny sometimes and just sometimes its one of the best ways to learn: Run away from players, or shoot em on sight. The wasteland is harsh and there are no cops.

Hehe, Rusty is a GM if I'm not mistaken. GM's and other admin type people often do that for fun and testing shit. This is a beta after all.

Just keep playing and learn from you mistakes, plan your character ahead of time, and make sure you do the small time quests.

You can also make a quick profit just from scavenging cities for junk (I suggest the city area around the vault 15 circle), and then trading it for items down at NCR, VC, Junktown or Hub. Just be quick about it, thieves are everywhere.

Try to gain your first level in easy quests and shit shoveling, then dump all those points into your tagged combat skill, and then go out and kill scorpions and other low level critters. Make sure Turn based is on by default when you go out into the wastes.

AND REMEMBER:

TRUST NO ONE
