Depends, if you want more protection against Laser and Plasma, then bette choice is Tesla ofc!

If you don't use psycho (you are a sniper/rocket/party leader) then metal MK2 or BA is the best choice for you
BUT
Tesla is the best for the most pvp actions if you play as heavy fighter:

Toughness x2 = +10% Normal DR
Tesla = +20% Normal DR
Psycho x2 = +60% Normal DR

So you'll get max DR in the game - 90% Normal DR (against heavy fighters and normal snipers), 90% Laser DR (against laser snipers) and 80% Plasma DR (against plasma grenadiers).

90% and if u got shot from .223 it will be 70%, 5mm AP - 55%

anyways i will go back to topic: if u need protection from plasma use tesla armor, for lasers i advise u to use metal armorMK2 coz for some reason tesla armor  with 80%DR and 12 TH still leaks some dmg even without armor bypass,

 metal armor is perfect agains lasers, almost every hit without armor bypass will be for no damage.

Metal, you need normal damage resist.

Well taking Metal MKII for everyday farming seems kinda risky to me. I rather choose leather since its cheaper, gives at least some protection and its incredibly cool looking piece of armor.

if you're a full combat build than yes, if you plan to craft and gather with a STR under 6 stay with the leather.

You can gather in leather armor or jacket or even in bluesuit.
But every armor under metal is almost useless, but explosions. Even simple leather jacket can save your life vs suicidal bomber at NCR, because it's 20% DR. For hunting and casual wear you can get metal mk2, it's only 2550 at NPC, it's only 319 needler cartriges ^_^
