Items aging
« on: April 02, 2010, 02:42:09 pm »

Leaving your stuff on the ground exposes it to influence of sand, cockroaches and other nasty things you wouldn't think of. :)  How about introducing time-dependent deterioration of items? Such deterioration would affect only stuff left on the ground, not the ones stored in containers.
For example: in one real-time day each destroyable item laying on the ground gains 1% deterioration, and after it's broken there is a chance that it decomposes (like using on it low-skill science).
After some time gangs as well as alone players have shitloads of stuff laying here and there. Such a feature could affect a little bit the quantity of it. It would also encourage players to get some additional containers if there was such an option in game.

As said in the other thread, I think it's a good idea. And as said above, sooner or later players will have huge amounts of useless items laying everwere in bases, tents etc. This would prevent it a bit. If the wasteland is so harsh as everyone is saying, items should also suffer from sand, time etc.

I suggested it here: http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=2432.0

And for some reason everyone and their dogs were saying "this iz shit man" whereas here you've got even two people supporting you instantly. No fair.

I can support too ;p
Btw I was supporting you there too, but I don't think that means something.

Anyway, of couse it'll be good, but I think the main problem is "how to implement".

Looks like I have to start using search button.
http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=2432.0

So far I see two groups of people most hurt by this suggestion:
1. Big faction uber-power pvp-ers that want to have the least troubles with getting and maintaining best top tier stuff like BA, sniper rifles, lsw etc. to not be worse than others and pwn with best stuff.
2. Collectors that just want to have as much and as cool as possible stuff in their base.

First of all, I don't think that - as in example - 1% det per day is that much comparing to when you actually use your stuff (and many times get killed), nor would it add some big difference to needed repair(unless you've got yourself 1500 items lying on the ground).
If you want to keep your super important stuff like BA and Gatlings shiny forever, then there would be containers for this. Science and repair skills would get more important, too.
Anyways, eventually before the wipe most players will end up not knowing what could they possibly do with their huge stockpiles of items.

Well just wait and there would be more

I appreciated the support :)

The problem is that bases already go poof after 4 weeks, so I don't think the devs are interested in deleting items slowly any more.

To have only stuff you use ;p
I once visited a tent of my friend... he got like 435394866834 deteorated shotguns/10mm pistols/spears/other crap from encounters, laying on a ground... why? He'll never use it, so why does he overloading server with this useless junk?

You wear that shirt you got from your mom? You use that old bike? What about that mobile phone you have changed for better one?
Its in human nature to collect stuff even when they don't use it. And there is nothing like useless junk. Items can be sold or better dismantled and eventually they will serve their purpose. You could say that fruit or organic stuff should loose its quality over time but implementing such thing would mean only pain in the ass for everyone apart from poor people. Even when I have like nothing compared to some other gang members I have like shitload of low items that I never used. I just trade with them when I'm short on ammo or something like that. And I don't see how this idea would help anything but add another annoying aspect to the game.

Here this, sorry, fucking disgusting ridiculousness goes again. My vote is no and no. It was already suggested before and rarely someone liked it and yeah. No.

Very good suggestion, but 1% per one real life day is too long, I think it is better to have 1% per one in game hour.

What you are talking about is keeping 5 shotguns at a tent for later use.
What happens in game is like this in real life:
