New spy devices: Tape recorder and Bug

Tape recorder:

Use science skill on the item to start/stop the tape recorder. It must be inside player inventory to record what people are saying. If you put the recorder outside the inventory of player who turned it on (drop it/put somewhere/trade), it turns off automatically.

When the recorder is turned on, it records everything the player holding the recorder can hear, including names of the people IF the player can see the names. Basically it copies says/shouts/whispers/radio the person can hear on the tape recorder. It would be a simple in-game logging that can't be forged.

When the tape recorder is full the recorder stops recording. The tape can hold some arbitrary number of characters, for example 2000 (there is no time limit, it can work forever if noone will say anything).

You can use the recorder (hand icon), to open the recorded messages. It's displayed in a similar way to holodisks content, but the messages can't be edited or deleted (you will need a new recorder when the one you used is full).

Maybe it should record game date/time when it's turned on.

Tape recorder could be used for in-game contracts, blackmails, etc ;)

Bug:

You can set the bug to any radio channel and put in any container/critter or simply on ground. Then any message in the distance of 6 hexes from the bug will be passed to the radio channel (without names, it would work like a radio automagically sending messages it can "hear"). It would be great if some sounds could be passed too as special messages, like **gun shooting** **explosion** **door creaking** **sound of footsteps** (if someone is running) etc.

Bug could be used for spying or as alarm device.

How to obtain these items:
I think Tape recorder should be fairly easy to buy (like holodisks) because it's not reusable (I think it shouldn't be possible to erase messages because you couldn't share it safely even at gunpoint)
Bug should be much less common, could be in some treasure encounter.

And now we can go bust crooks like Gizmo hehe, just don't try it on little Mobby ey?  ;)
Nice idea and you can make some nice scenarios with it.

This is pretty cool!

I remember such an item for The-Specialists (HL1-Mod) RP-Servers. I always planted bugs on enemy syndicate members and spied on their meetings :D

Recorder = F2

Bug might be somewhat useful.

Recorder = F2

No, because it's not a proof that someone really said something.
The point of recorder is you couldn't edit the recording.

ALSO I was thinking about option to play the recorder back (you press play and the dialog would be displayed like a normal dialog in message boxes, for anyone who can see the person holding the recorder. Just like the people actually were there and were saying it), but this could be too much a troll device (but maybe not, it would be pretty funny to confuse people with it).

Tape recorder is useless.  just press F2 and give to your buddies on mumble skype or teamspeak.

Besides, no useful information normally gets passed by text anyways.

Now the Bug...  That's interesting.  I would rather say, give it ability to track players somehow.  On worldmap and in town.  Worldmap just showing extra player like this as it moves and gets into encounters.

+ -Player: JovankaB  Status:  Travelling/In encounter.

You could bug several players.  And with good pickpocket/thief skill, and depending on their perception, they may not be able to see the bug in their inventory for some time until the good roll comes their way and it shows up in their inventory.  (can be rolled and re-rolled every time you open inventory, or maybe a seperate action.

You could even find people's bases this way I would hope :).

But you can also get a high perception buddy to search you using steal skill to spot it.  Stealing a bug from someone would always succeed no matter the steal skill.

Great idea, bug is ideal, but about tape recorder, it would be nice if you could hide it somewhere and then just take it and listen (read ;p). As well it could be connected somehow with traps skills to get less possibility to find it. (as well as with another side, that if higher traps, then higher chance to detect traps)

I like both ideas.  F2 isn't proof... this would be concrete proof of what was said with no editing possible.  I like it immensely.

I like both ideas. Good work! Well thought.

I think a tape recorder should have a delete function too, so a taped recording could be wiped* and the recorder could be used multiple times. 2000 character limit (and no time limit) also makes sense as this is the character limit of holotapes, and such a recorder would be voice activated.

Also an alternate version of the recorder could be hidden on the ground somewhere and loaded with holotapes. It records everything within a (?) hex limit and it's capacity is less limited depending on how many tapes you load it with (max 8 maybe).

Also, holotapes used this way could be switched to "read only". Then they only record once, cannot be deleted or edited. A 1-time use tape! Thus anyone who reads them can see there was no way to tamper with the contents.

*Use of the word "wipe" here has no relation to the server wipe which is "very soon" lol. Any similarity in terms is purely coincidental and Marko LLC recognizes no legal obligations associated with the server wipe ;)

This game doesn't need anymore bugs!

But yeah, I like it. Would be great for bases and such. Especially the part with footsteps to know if anyone has been near your stuff.
