So, how to start, hm?
« on: September 12, 2011, 01:03:25 pm »

Hello,

I am very new to this game. I had luck to find someone who helped me to get the hides for my tent.

But now I am there, in this huge, bad world. And all I can do is collect junk?

When I try to explore places like vaults, all I find there are playerkillers.

When I fight randoms like rats, even after some shots my gear is in bad shape, and try to repair it ends in even more bad shape. The NPC merchant have just damaged weapons, almost always not the type of ammunition I need etc.

So.. what exactly can there be done? I want to explore the world, find some caves and bunkers and explore them (like in Fallout and Fallout 2) but it looks like that this is impossible here?

I came up and the NCR base, and most I find there are thiefs and playerkillers. So is this all that is offered for new players?

I hope not and I really hope to find some nice people who can give some good advice or maybe even some ingame help. I am level 7 now and still all I can do to get some XP and money is collecting junk :/

Would be nice to find some "nice" persons here that want to help out :)

Correct, there isn't much content to explore in terms of PvE. You can hunt random encounters, try visit Glow or check random caves (but it's not very exciting, most of the time you will find some condoms and rats or nothing). Quests are mostly fetching stuff and running from one NPC to the other (but if you don't know them yet, they can be OK I guess). Expect to be killed by running bands of players in the meantime though.

Don't get me wrong, FOnline can be fun, but forget about Fallout/Fallout 2 experience. It's a different game.
Pretty much everything revolves around PvP, farming and hanging around.

Hmmm.. I see.

Another question: How can a player that I am not teamed with find my tend? I just went there and he waited there for me and killed me.

Now.. can he see it and steal all that is in there?

He can't find your tent on his own. You took him there.

People can tag you and follow you to the world map as part of your party. There is no confirmation window or anything like that for party leader. You can see them on player lists and kick them from the party in the world map view, but new players often miss it. Watch out for people who stand near you when you leave town. They should have "follow" icon over their head, if they try join you during travel. If they do, kick them from player list in the world map view.

Once he leaves your tent, he won't be able to come back (unless you take him there again).

Good to know..

so for now my tent is save, yes?

So what exactly is the goal here? What can all be done?

Random encounters may be fun but since I lack repair skills (and don´t find a tool in the shops) it is not worth it.

I have some money and at least an armor and a weapon, but don´t know what to do and where to go without loosing those instantly (or having them damaged to 100 % after 5 battles).

Yes, your tent is safe if the player left it.

There is no ultimate goal. You could call it PvP sandbox I guess. The first goal would be learning how to survive.
Get to 21 level, find some friends, make some enemies and do PvP (town controll, random PKing or hunting PKs/other gangs).
You can also just hang around / roleplay / interact with friends or random players. Help some people, kill some people.
Sometimes there are events organized by GMs or other players. That's pretty much it, but it can be addictive.

Also remember it's not finished game. Your goal should be beta testing ;)

About repairing: if you don't have over 100% repair, forget it. You will just make it worse. Improve combat skills, then weapon wil deteriorate slower.
You need more than one weapon and more than one armor. So if you die, it's less painful.
Craft a few weapons, a few armors and store in tent. Wear only things that you need, don't walk around with important items.

What Jovanka said is correct, from me i can add that you should avoid visits in towns that are under town control operations. If such operation is taking place in specific town, ussualy a timer with description appear at top part of your screen.

And dont try to make everything with one char. You need to join faction. And they will show you how to properly exploit wasteland to make it fun and not just pain in the ass.

Thanks for your advices :)

Someone told me this with the not one char methode, and I just made a char now who will be a small guns crafter.

Later then I will try to make a good fighter char.

A faction hmm.. yes, that would be good, too later I guess.

Today I tried to talk to Rondo about armorer profession and then he killed me.. I lost things with about 8.000 money or more worth.

That is... you know it.

How could such things happen?

Maybe you were standing in door while talking to him (they will kill you for blocking the passage if you stand for too long).

if you have 40% first-aid collect xander and/or broc and make healing powder. you will get 8xp for each one made (which adds up at lower levels) and you can sell them for 40 caps each (which also adds up) at the gun and general store in the Hub, when they have caps. If they don't have caps store them at your tent and try another time, store caps regenerate periodically at which point it's a race to sell before someone else gets them all.

It beats the shit out of shoveling shit and will fund you well early int the game.

Economy is screwed, you might want to store some caps at your tent... and make sure you don't take anyone else there who you don't absolutely trust.

make shotguns. They are easy to make and have an accuracy perk which will make you a more effective shot at early stage of your character. Only problem with them is they have ridiculously low range, but at early stage your range is limited by your skill anyway.

travel in groups, but get used to RT combat.

there are some places where you will be forced to use RT combat so it pays to train with it. Also encounters are over much quicker, quicker encounters = less chance of being encountered by an unfriendly. Also, people will only encounter you if they play in RT or both modes, so fewer people are likely to encounter you.

Not in gun store, sell in hospitals and clinics. If you are lucky, you get caps, if you're not, you get a few stims.

gun store in Hub gives good prices! (the central one in market, not the one in old town). It gives same prices as the general store. 20 powders yield about 1k caps

You guys mostly forgot something pretty important... - to CRAFT!

Even at lower levels it should be viable to craft some guns and ammo (perfect toys at lower levels). Some people (including me) is playing mostly for pleasure of crafting stuff.

Oh and by the way. If you got some broken equipment you can find someone to fix it for you (i'd try NCR but be wary of sinister thieves there - don't go there with items in your backpack - especially not precious ones)
