noob faction
« on: August 12, 2011, 06:46:53 pm »

I'm new to FOnline, been playing about 2 months now. I was wondering if it was possible to make a faction that you join when you register, you start off in the middle of the desert with amnesia as it is, you must have come from somewhere.
It could be a simple cave base, but with no storage containers, just a still and some mercs for protection. Maybe a harvest-able tree outside.
The starting NPC could give directions to a base nearby that they know of which happens to be where it's located.
If you kill another player you get kicked automatically but you can leave peacefully with no penalty.
Once you get to a certain level you get kicked automatically, say level 3.
Until you are kicked or leave you could re-spawn there, which could make it a good way to meet new people.

I think NPC faction for noobs is pretty good idea. You could get some help there and learn stuff (in game tutorials like Boneyard crafting quest). Quests for noobs like the one with crafting pistol in Boneyard don't work well because noobs are unlikely to find them anyway. If they were inside noob faction, it would make more sense.

But it would be hard to make and doesn't add anything for regular players so I doubt it will be implemented.

Why dont new characters start in arroyo-like village, with helpful NPCs and maps that would allow you to try mining, gathering. Then after you decide you know it all, you leave the village and wont be allowed to return.

Sarakin i agree... i think it was suggested before but still very good idea for new people.who cares about old players, they know the drill, new guys don't.

I suggested Arroyo and temple of trials to be added as one time tutorial, but unfortunately all focus was given to the fact that it somehow conflicts with the storyline. So lets be proud FO has a true storyline and complete lack of newbie help.

It doesnt have to be THE Arroyo and THE Temple of trials, just name it randomly and use the same map with various modifications.

Yup, but i think it best to be "learn system" like we now got.
People don't learn anything from tutorial. They learn everything on real wasteland!

Give a REASON why it is the best.

I understand that Lexx worked hard on new spawn locations, but they can be used elsewhere.

Give a REASON why it is the best.
1. People got experience on "Wasteland" style, not on somekind easier way as tutorial.
2. I heard somewhere this game is hard for new players. It should stay as it, because i like challences.
3. Tutorial and real action is totally different. If people count on too much things they learned from tutorial and try same thing on real wasteland.. they will fail.

I think those reasons are enough for you.

1. Why not easier way ?
2. The fact that YOU like challenges doesnt mean that others like them too. And you as an experienced player cant speak for newbies
3. Trying out mining wont be different from NCR mining. Gathering some herbs wont be different from gathering herbs elsewhere. This place would be like "getting started" in practice.

Listen, this suggestion is not for you, definitely not for me, but I believe some new players would appreciate it. Im getting sick of reading how newbies quit in a few hours because they didnt know basic things. I want flourishing server with countless possibilities and high playerbase is the cornerstone.

Hi, this topic is not easy at all. I will not be able to write this in short.

This game is harsh, and we know it. And many of us do LOVE IT! I will never forget those first days and weeks, when i was afraid of everything, even of those stones, that never move. It was one of the best times i had in this game.

I really dont wish this game to become some easy peasy Hello Kitty. But let's face it. Player base is not that big, and every player that quits before he explores a game a bit is a sad loss. We need bigger player base.

And that often means that new players are people, who did not played F1 or F2 (And even that would not help them much, because of all those changes in 2238.). For such people it's really difficult, because they are not only fighting Players/Critters but the Game and GameInterface itself. They don't know how to controll the game. That means even the most basic tasks, as gathering fibers are difficult for them. And that is if you provide them with plant and knife ;]

Tutorial is something that would be really usefull for neewbees. And an in-game one is the best kind.

Things to consider:
* Option to easilly skip the tutorial, so we don't upsett experienced players.
* Locations done by Lexx are nice and should be used like they are now. At the end of tutorial, you will be asked to bring something from the wasteland, so you leave the village and bam, sand/radiation storm and you find a cave, where you can hide... you know the rest ;]
* You might even be a member of the Village Faction, so you would understand, how factions work.
* Exploits: items,experiences,killing abuse

Most people leave before getting to know the wisdom u already have. Conversely, they encounter thieves and some bunch of guys camping near city and pwning them from LSWs and are like wtf. Another thing is players who never played F1 or F2 before. Knowing this they will surely get pwned without any help provided, wont use all features of the game u clearly enjoy. This kind of thinking efficiently shrinks the number of people who are willing to play this game. Some people get on and stay but this strategy is not a recipe for a success.

- Option to skip the tutorial would be inherited, you could leave the location immediately
- These locations could be used like this : random encounter where you meet that caravan, which will tell and show you the location of the nearest city and by talking to one NPC, you would gain 50xp, repeatably (once every encounter), cave/underground could posses some items guarded by weak mobs
- A fake faction terminal would be appreciated, where new players could try out inviting people, resigning, etc
- no PvP in the location, no steal, experience would stay, items too (you wouldnt find anything useful there beside hammer, knife.. )

This gave me an idea to have "brigdekeepers" (those in violet robes asking questions in FO2) found in random encounters.

They would ask questions like:

"Which skill one need to use on 10 brahmin skins to set up a tent?"

"What is the most northern protected City?" etc
