Title: Here in my car I feel safest of all
Post by: Badger on April 18, 2010, 05:18:36 pm
So I'm one of the few people who was bored enough to buy a car.

It's a shame, they're an interesting feature but totally wasted. I fight in turnbased, meaning that every shitty encounter me and my merc get out of the car and have to kill every single pigrat before the game will let us drive off. I'm not entirely sure what we were doing outside the car to begin with.

As I'm typing now, I've just got into an encounter with molerats, pigrats and a hermit and have spawned 20 hexes away from my car. How the hell did that happen?

But, point is, nobody uses cars. So, I suggest that so long as you're driving your outdoors is crazily high. The equivalent of 200% outdoors. And the cars themselves are a lot, LOT faster. And Gordon's Gas Station will actually refuel your car for a very small fee. Like 100 caps for a full tank.

That sounds like Gordon is an idiot, if he "gives out" MFCs that cheap.

Why don't you add gasification drives? There's still lots of irradiated wood around.

Did I mention MFC? I said he refueled your car. All done via dialogue, in the same way T-Ray repairs your car. But hey, thanks for addressing none of my other points.

I take all of this back, I parked to speak to my merc and now 25 people are in the encounter. The car is lost, but that was worth it.

look at this Forum, there are plenty of idiots around. Gordon could be one of them ;)

So the point is, Badger, why do you have to stop at the encounter at all?

I agree, there must be a possibility to DRIVE PAST, also, while you standing, you're a easy target for everybody around. it's too dangerous to have a car parked near a city without having guards around.

Some characters with 300 Outdoor are even faster than a Buggy (how comes?)

Sorry for the spam, but I just really had to laugh. :D

And I agree with you. I'd also really like to have a car in FOnline. But for what? They aren't giving really any bonusses.
They are sure there for the style, but jost for the style they're to expensive I fear.  :-\

BTW, is it possible to park your car in a tent?

If a faction creates tents near every important location, having the official driver char as follower, that would be a perfect garage. Of course, stopping anywhere but hidden locations would cause a case described by Badger.

Now look at what i have done.
That was a most safe method for parking a car, now the devs will 'fix' parking cars and caravans at tents for 'the sake of balanced gameplay'

NOW cars are useless and dangerous. Blame me.

Cars run on MFCs, if you don't upgrade them.

I know that, but why would a gas station be charging cars with portable batteries rather than, say, a generator? I don't think all cars were charged using batteries in pre-war America.

But that's arguing over semantics. The actual point I'm trying to make is that adding functioning gas stations would be a step towards making cars cheaper and more practical.

Guards?
Title: Re: Here in my car I feel safest of all

Guards?

Dead guards? Cars are more worth than ammo.
I mean, Enclave gas station would be safe, don't know about others.
Refueling car at fixed points would be even more dangerous.

Ah yes, why should the car be visible to everyone at global map? Was it intentionally made or is it a software limitation?

Cars visible for everybody in worldmap is kind of crazy. Bad bad design. Same goes with caravan cars.

Being forced to fight off any encounter is bad too, you could just drive past them. But you shouldn't always even notice them so while driving you would miss lots of encounters because they can't catch you and you won't notice them.

Maybe kind of invisible locations except for the car driver and the people that were in car with him would solve this ? (If it is even possible...)

A tent, used as garage. Obvious, isn't it?

Well we have something like that now, but instead of a car, we have a radio. Though with a temporary location. We also have those instanced quest maps.

They also don't like to lose all thier gear when die. So losing a car shouldn't be a problem, even if it's so expensive. But.. it's the car! Drive on your own risk.

Well i'm more annoyed by how easy it is to steal a car. I was one of the guys that bought a car aswell.
It got stolen in 20 minutes, by a guy with 28% lockpick. I mean okay, cars should be stealable. But gaurds don't react on lockpicking, and somoene with 28% lockpick shouldnt even have chance to lockpick the thing. I mean it's a big investment 50k caps.

This is the problem. As with a lot of stuff in FOnline, it's so easily lost people don't want to take it out into the world. If it were up to me, buying a car would be like buying a base. You cough up the money and you get to keep it forever. Maybe people could break into the trunk, but your car was forever yours. Nobody else could drive it, and there would be no 'key' item to lose. It's drastic, but cars would be an actual investment and worth the hefty price tag.

The next problem was getting out of gas in the desert. Then the car was lost as well and this happened pretty often.

You could actually move into the vehicle and drive around the map with it IIRC?
That would be indeed nice, but I suppose it's just a shitload of work to get this working in the engine.

Make car stealing require lockpick minimum 200 and a Luck check, and advanced lockpicks.

Failed luck check destroys tools and gives a 2 hour cooldown.

So Car Thieves will be a 200+ lockpick, 10 Luck specialty.

It takes all kinds.

I like this one actually, you can lockpick the trunk, but you can't lockpick the car door itself. Sure it isnt realistic, but atleast it's fair. If this would get implented people would actually start using cars (I would, even for it's slow speed I like the trunk size)

Why can't we just put a merc stay in the car and prevent anyone from stealing it? Doesn't sound too irrational. Or just bribe the local guards to pay some extra attention on that car of yours.

If people can only see car spot if they are on or one away from the tile that the car is at (2 tiles if they have the Scout perk). That would be an improvement I think. If you get caught right next to NCR you are still screwed, but I think that makes some sense because everyone is going to be walking past you and moving around NCR.

And why people can safely steal your car at guarded town? Why guards ignoring him? Lockpicking a car must be almost the same as stealing an item.

What about car's signaling? Impossible to craft and be able to buy this feature somewhere at unguarded town. So if someone will try to lockpick your car even in sneak mode and this city is guarded, then he'll have some problems.

ok so after reading up on cars.. I want a buggy but is it worth it ? I mean am I just going to lose it or wat? I was guna make a new topic but il chat in this one... any pros and cons for getting a car? I mean lets really try to figure out if their worth it or not... I really want one lol but I dont want to waste the caps for nothing...

So... lets say Im driving my car out of my depot to explore the wastes to pick up some loot... (reason why I want one) would this be worth the caps or shoudl I just upgrade my outdoorsman and forget about cars?

and lets say I run out of gas... will there be a visible yellow circle for all the see on the world map ?

Any time you are in an encounter, other people can see your car on the world map. It isn't just if your car runs out of gas.

If you are close to civilization like NCR, you are going to get hoards of noobs coming in out of curiosity, if you are lucky.
If you are unlucky, you will be attracting some big gang that will blow the shit out of you.
And then you will also attract players that will come in while you are battling the big gang and steal your car with Lockpick.  :P

Right now, I agree cars needs major improvements.

I can't really think of any good ideas other than putting a sensor bomb on the car that will blow anyone that isn't in your faction up upon touching the car. It will damage the car a lot, but also damage the thief a lot.

Make trunk lockpickable, not car. Some things you really shouldnt have to be forced to lose. It just doens't make sense to do that. If cars are stealable, then so should bases. And mines. And everything. even NCR, even A vault city turret, a ghoul, a death claw, an entire regiment of remnants of master's army, a GM, a Dev, a Dev's tent, all of the game. ALL OF EVERYTHING AND FOREVER. Solar.

Well a recent fix, they did say that prices of cars shouldn't raise quite so harsh, as the case just after wipe to present.  Other than some people buying cars, and someone keeping track or saying what they sold them for, have no clue if it worked however.  I bought my Buggy day before that fix.   :'(
