And boost up the client size several hundred megabyte.

And? How much critters are we talking about? Stalkers and toads.

And later all player character variations...

Better buy a new computer.

Of course, if you can afford this.

Otherwise, let's suffer from crash, for only 2 critters.

And later all player character variations...

Nope.
I expressed myself unclear - just the mobs should be rendered, the 3d can be reserved for the player customisation.
This way the performance can be saved.

If your computer can't take the low poly mobs, it won't be able to deal with the 3d player characters as well.

Thousands of lowpoly mobs make one highpoly Lagmob. And then also additional 3d player models.

I repeat: it is for the purpose of saving performance. Those who can't handle 3d, can get it optionally.

By the way, is it possible to make a 3d critter replacement mod clientside?

Everyone will use 3d models or nobody, we won't add some "chose your style"-option. The performance gain you suggest would be so small it isn't really worth talking about. Especially considering that human characters are all around and therefore will be a higher performance strain for you than the other mobs (they naturally have more polygons and also extra items attached to them. Helmets, armors, weapons, etc).

I get that 3d critters are easier to mod than frm ones, but almost crashing connexion is not a necessery step in implementing those critters.

I hope there would be some possibilities to lower the required space for these models, or to lower anything that cause client to get mad when it sees desertstalkers or toads.
