3d character contest
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:31:40 pm »

HI!

As some of You know, some of us are trying to recreate current ingame 2d sprites to 3d models. So I ask any of You 3d modelers to try yourself in this task.
Here are models we are interested in - especially human ones. The point is to catch possible most similar models to 2d sprites - in size, pose, proportions and perspective. If You aren't interested or don't have such skills, maybe You know someone who is good in 3d and will help us?

It doesn't matter if You are noob or pro in 3d. Try yourself, maybe You will find your hidden skills!

Join now! FOnline needs You!

Please post Your work here :)

My own progress, example:

IMPORTANT

If You are 2d artist, You can try to make some model sheets (references), we will be glad too.

I suck at drawing and modeling, so here's my >9000 hours in Paint.
I throw for a start the original concept head with comic hero proportions. Original is only the paintjob and copypasting the head.
Meanwhile, i'll TRY to recreate the side view or create something better.

WIP, this post will be edited.

Alvarez, main point is to find really good proportions, after putting model to game it all sucks, it doesn't look as hard as it is to find it out. I used this one:

and it is not even close to vault dweller :(

we really need good "model sheet"

I said, it's for a start. And that was a starting point - comic hero proportions.

Since the devs probably used them originally, they encountered that problem with isometric view. On this picture, which Lexx kindly provided to us we see that the head of the character is as wide as tall and the inner leg sides don't meet at groin.

So i supposed, that the developers made the figure wider by cutting it it half and adding a part in the middle, also supersizing the details, since the sprite is so small and the figure won't look as presentable with correct proportions in isometric view - it would look too thin.
This is my next step:

Besides, i think it's good to document the steps. It motivates and users can throw in critics early enough.

looks better but it`s still not good
you need to improve position of knees, torso proportions, arms and shoulders, without a good blueprint or reference image it can be difficult, but not impossible
also perspective is wrong and lighting
i have some experience in 3D graphics (modeling and animation) and also i study computer science with computer graphics specialization, so i will try to help in my free time, when not playing of course :D

This model has 690 quad polygons, but it actually may  have more than 1000 polys,  or should I say triangles. Its not bad as a start point to making low poly model . I guess for this engine low poly character should not be over 400 triangles .

Nah, some models for the guns (see 3d development topic) have 500 triangle polys and over. And that's just a gun.
