Bounty system!
« on: October 01, 2010, 10:11:44 pm »

I was thinking of a bounty system. If a player kills you, you can go to the bounty hunters offices or w/e it would be called and you can put a bounty on that players head. You must pay a default fee of 50 (just a random price, could be raised) caps to start the bounty and then the actual bounty (can be anything from 1-100000 caps, the higher the number, the more other players will wanna kill him). The NPC have a list of your standing bounties and a list of all the bounties placed by players in that town - you can retract your bounty at any time but the initial flat rate fee is kept (those 50 caps). Other players can also add onto a standing bounty on the central list if they are a victim of that player. Bounties can only be collected by killing the player by your own hand. Dynamite does not count in this case and neither to mercs. Once a bounty is collected, the victim's slate is wiped clean (cannot have another bounty placed on him until he kills another player, allowing that player to start a bounty).
-dont know if i mentioned this but you can only add to a bounty if you are a victim of that player.

As you can probably tell, this system will allow players to choose the path of notoriety or good citizenship. Those who choose to PK extensively may have a tough time getting through a highly populated town alive where as those who just craft will be at ease. I think it will put some pressure on PKing; it will make players decide if they want to play it safe, or wreak havoc.

criticisms, suggestions, feedback, brainstorm! I think this idea is pretty nifty, you may not. I still would like to hear all of your voices :)

You're not the first one to suggest this.

It was discussed few weeks back here.

Bounty hunting just aint gonna work as long as players have no reason to avoid death. If I was hunted, I'd just strip my gear and agree a place to meet my killer, get killed and then share the bounty with him.

And the bounty hunter would happen to get into cultural and yet conclusive conversation of you agreeing to get killed. Personally, Id just kill the person with 10mm smg without warning in a town and if outside town, even better! Bounties could include several deaths!

It could also work like this. Bounties placed on players by players and paid for by players. If a player wants to hunt down a bounty, he asks the bounty hunter official for either a high (4000+caps) priority, medium (1000+ caps) priority or low (Under 1000 caps) priority bounty. High priority bounties are the highest paying bounties, low priority are the lowest and medium's payout is medium. The assignment is random so you cannot choose your friends and what not so abuse in that sense is impossible (unless by coincidence). You have to kill your target within 24hrs with low priority, 12 hours medium, 6 hours high.
When you kill your target, you are given an ear/finger to take back to the bounty hunting agency. Basically, anyone with that ear/finger has the rights to the bounty prize. If you drop it, someone could claim your prize.

It doesn't matter how you put it. As long as there's nothing to the killed person to lose it's gonna be a bland feature. Dying is not a problem, nobody cares about it. So if the hunted dies while wearing nothing it doesn't bother him at all.

I don't see how that will change anything. If Billy makes a bounty against Karl, then Jimmy (Karl's friend) could still kill Karl and Karl will come right back, and they share the money.
