Death of Merchants
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:41:13 pm »

People should get a punishment for killing merchants in towns like NCR because I can never sell or buy items because they are always dead and once they do respawn they end up dieing before I can do anything. Please fix this

You got merchants in almost every city, you can sell or buy items on other places too.

They also have a different range of prices. So they aren't the same. Also since the world map speed is lower, walking to another town isn't a good option.

I'd think the cops would be mad because the merchants are getting killed.

Already! I have to make alts to kill Sha Enin regulary, because my main has so bad reputation that I need to be offline whole day to kill Sha Enin again. That's the punishment ;p

Yeah let's put some 1 hit KO snipers on the roofs :D
Won't help. Now I bursting Sha Enin, then hiding SMG in inventory and walking away from him sometimes answering to someone's "noooooo" by "yeaaa" and only then dying.
With this I won't hide my SMG and say anything, but it won't change anything, Sha Enin will be dead anyway.

or enhace there health

Before wipe some days Sha Enin had like 250 HP, but he still will die and it won't help him, only making Sha Enin godlike will make him avoid killers, if he will have 90% DR, 50 DT and 500000 HP with dual plasma minigun immune to crits.

Right now punishment works like bad reputation with NCR, so I always have from -1400 to -1600 reputation, one alt has like -500, 3rd -200 or something.
Other punishment can be decreasing NCR rep for killing Sha Enin (and other traders) more than on 100, may be like 500, but it'll force me to make even more alts.
Solution is changing respawning of Sha Enin from 2-3 hours (now) to 1-2 minutes, then killing him will be pointless, so I'll only lock him somewhere.
So there's another solution to remove thier strange behaviour, and simply make them always hold thier position and never ever move.

One thing about RavenousRat has to be said: He's a fair and good tester even if he always trolls the NCR dudes.  ;)

I think they should do something, because that's what you usually see when coming to NCR:

Yes, there must be Sha Enin, but now he is missing.. as always, because he flee from me everytime he see me, so I made him stuck in non public place again where noone see him.
But I like it more than killing, because I don't lose reputation, so I can do that 24/7 and without alts, that's really fun to hear shouts in NCR what they think about me.

Why do you do it then? Is that fun for you to spoil the game for others?  ::)
I appreciate your efforts of beta testing, but there is a border between testing something ingame and trolling.
And I think you already crossed that border. -.-

Sorry to say that RavenousRat but I believe merchants should be unkillable... they have a quite a long respawn and they're a foundation of gameplay...

I personally dont kill merchants and get annoyed by their absence...

but...

I thought the wasteland was harsh right?

Being killed in a guarded city while innocent (ie no weapon drawn, no drugs, no stealing) is okay... and not an abuse and everyone says "well harsh harsh harsh. Suck it up"...

Why is this any diffrent? If Devs didnt want sha enin to die he wouldnt be killable! They didnt want him robbed so he is unrobbable now.

So, get over it. There are more cities out there. Is it dangerous to go there? Sure it is... but the wasteland is harsh.

Also in my opinion its unfair that they are unlootable! Why can someone kill me and loot me but not a wealthy merchant? where do all those radios go? To tech-heaven?

So yea, let them be killable is my vote. Unless if you want to change many other things that are in "legal" but "unethical".

Or keep it this way.

A Greek politician who has been sending money off-shore to avoid paying taxes (while working for the ministry of economics and urging citizens to pay their taxes) said

"If it is LEGAL then it is also ETHICAL"

Lets assume we move to another town because NCR traders and NCR banker are always dead or missing.
Lets say we go to the Hub.
What makes you think the problem of dead or missing merchants and bankers doesn't move with us?

I don't mind traders being killable, but they should response within a minute.
Bankers should never be killable.
The moment you draw a weapon in a bank, guards should shoot you.
Banks should be well guarded after all.

Banks in a wild west scenario (which is Fallout really... a Post Apocalyptic Western style world) were getting robbed regularly until the federal goverment stepped in. Even then they were robbed regularly but robbers were now occasionally caught.

Even modern banks, despit the sophisticated systems and mechanisms are steal robbed...

So just murdering the banker should not pose a problem for someone really determined to do and die.

I agree on the respawn.

My idea is respawn time should be the same time as a weakened timer. 5-10 minutes and he is back.

BUT

I would also like them to be lootable and even robbable. After all it only makes sense... if players can rob me and take my Assault rifle (it actually happened) or kill me and take everything including my mark 2 metal armor then I should be able to do the same to any merchant regardless of if he is in a city or not...

It will probably be abused but there are solutions for that too (when the merchant appears he has limited stock and caps and it builds up with time) and in the end... abusing something (noobs after mining for example or those raiders that dont attack you near NCR) is part of the wastelands harshness right?
