A couple of questions
« on: September 01, 2010, 01:56:26 pm »

Hello,

I am a new player, a friend mentioned that this is the *REAL* Fallout Online and none of that 3d whatever crap. PKing, Stealing, Factions etch. And so here I am.

Some questions that I did not find answered in the wiki.

-Are there any skills/attributes that do not work?

For example... does Luck have as a high importance as it used to have in the single player? I used to run the game with a toon with Luck 8+ (and even 10 a couple of times) and the results were amazing. Is the impact high here? Apart from crits it had to do with the random encounters, loot, some npc reactions etch. Is this implimented in FOnline 2238?

On the same topic, is speech and charisma of high importance? Since we dont have a full storyline and interaction is mostly done through PC's rather than NPCs is Charisma and Speech as important? Will there be a substantial amount of dialogue I will miss out if I keep it at 5 or even send it to 3-4?

 - Ok so when I die, is there a way to recover my items from my body if I get there first?

Last night after shoveling enough brahmin shit to take me to lvl 2 I had enough money for a pistol and bullets. After that I was ready to roam just a bit around NCR. And there I got an encounter with a merchant and his guards... once I approached to talk to him (in case he had something usefull to sell) his guards fired on me (I guess I went to close but I didnt know the game is designed so aggresively) and killed me AND the merchant (one of them had a flamer... I think there should be some more thought put on the NPCs and their willingness to allow friendly fire on the guy they are there to protect).

The thing is after I got revived at a close by camp I went where the encounter had happened but could not find my body (or the merchants) anywhere! So is all gear lost or how does this aspect work?

 - Turn based vs Real time.

I am starting to feel that real time combat is a huge and difficult thing. Even with just giant rats I have trouble as they move fast, surround me and attack me before I have time to click on my fists and then click on them. Does my high agility and high action points even matter if we are doing a real time combat?

Even worse with real time somebody shoot me and I die before I even have a chance to react. Are my reflexes rusty or is that they way it is supposed to work?

Lastly, if I select from my options to always have turn based combat but another Player has selected real time, whose option takes precedent if we meet?

 - Wilderness and meeting other PC's,

Yesterday after visiting a NCR base near NCR I went for a stroll. As the phone rang in real life and I went to answer I decided to stop where I was and leave the character waiting. As I was comming back I saw that someone had just shot me and taken my stuff and were leaving already. How come I have never seen any indication of people in the wilderness when I travel while they for example knew where I was and were able to find me in a random spot in the map? Is it time based? Ie if you stay at the same spot for more than 2-3 minutes then you appear in the map or something similar? Is there a way to detect PC's while in the world map?

Also, do you gain XP for killing PC's? Or is it only the satisfaction of the killing and the looting that motivates people?

- Lastly stealing and sneaking.

Out of curiosity I started an agility 10, steal and sneak ability character. I went around NCR trying to rob people to see if and how the skills work. First off even after I went far from other PCs and managed to sneak (ie it told me "sneaking") people could still see me (as in people started saying 'ah look at him trying to seek'). Is it because my skill is so low? (57%) or is there a diffrent mechanism for PC detection?

Similarly I went around trying to rob people (other level 1 and 2 people essentially) and I didnt even get failed message or any indication. I would always manage to look into their inventory, then I would drag their caps to my side for example and then the character would do the "stealing" movements but nothing would happen. No success or failure message would come to me, but I would be flagged as a thief AND it would say that I need to wait before stealing again.

Is this also due to low skill? (52%) even if my skills is low still 52% is quite high when employed against other low level pcs with perception 4-6 right?

Thanks in advance for your answers and sorry if some of the questions are very newbish but its goot to know these basics before venturing forth!

I think it is possible, however i have never tryed to do it. If you die in an encounter where e.g. npcs are fighting a pc, and you die there and come back right after ressurection. in thery if you walk on world map in that area you should be able to enter the encounter again ( unless the fight has already finished and the player have left )

yes, it matters. the more action points you have the more you can fight, and the more agility you have the faster your action points regenerate.

if you are in a encounter and someone is traveling in world map close to you, there is a chance he will enter your encounter. so its dangerous to wait anywhere. if you need to go afk wait on world map.

you don't get any xp for killing PC's. its mainly for loot or sadism  ;)

i don't know much about stealing and sneaking but i do know you need a really high skill in any of those to be succesful

Every availabe perk should work, but there are some useless perks like Gambler or Speaker.

I don't want to tell you how you shall make your character, but 1,6 or 10 are the values I would choose. With 6 luck you can choose the "combat perks" like #1, #2, #3 or #4. 10 Luck is for people who want the maximum amount of critical hits.

High Charisma is important for 2 or 3 quests and how much followers, mercenaries and slaves you can take with you. Speech isn't that important yet because there aren't that many quests. (But there is a small team working on quests). You have to have at least 3 charisma to talk and trade with most of the NPCs or to take one person with you. If you have 1 charisma you can take the Magnetic Personality perk to take at least one person, slave or mercenarie with you.

If you die alone in the wasteland your items are gone.

NPCs tell you if you are to close or if you shall holster your weapon. If you enter the inner city at the NCR with a weapon (that includes even a sledgehammer) guards will shoot you after a few seconds.

Yep.

Yes, a high amount of action points is even an advatage in real time mode, but if you have a low level I suggest to take the turn based mode.

That's how it works here. There are a lot of assholes around who try to kill you for a spear or even for pure amusement. If you are in turn based mode try to talk with other persons. Ask them if they want to make peace and check what kind of equipment they have. (I suggest the Awareness perk), In real time mode you better run as fast as you can.

Depends on who meets who. If you meet him it's real time mode. If he meets you it's turn based mode. There is always real time mode in towns by the way.

If you wait at the worldmap there shouldn't be a way that anyone can kill you or that you enter automatically, but I'm not entirely sure.

You don't gain any XPs for killing other players or NPCs in a town. There are just too many assholes around.

Sneak is very powerful if your skill is high enough. 57% is way too low. Read the wiki article and the changelog to get more informations.

Don't now much about stealing, but the guards at the NCR tell you if you get caught stealing.

Stealing. The wiki is one of your best friends. Hope I could help you a bit. ;)

Drugs like jet are also considered a weapon.

Guards don't always tell.
Sometimes the victim gets a message saying someone failed stealing from them.
The only way to find that out is to check your reputation.
It drops with the town's citizens.
You also lose your protection if this happens.

Thank you all for your answers,

indeed they are very usefull and essentially got all I needed... I guess in FOnline life is very cheap and very very hard.

Glad to see such a helpful community!

PS.

I dont care that much about the stealing part, but its good to know what to expect.

Sorry, but You will find that this is NOT the real fallout but is  "the game of pg alternative", ie you make the main character with a power build and with the second and the third pg procure to main pg everything they need.

Oh no no no never pick 1 LK, 2 LK much more better than 1, it's even much more better than 10 for 6.
