If you can't imagine anyone in Fallout having your name, it sucks.

And your parents are ashamed.

Counter Strike and Call of Duty 4(was even an achievement for doing it) come quickly to mind.

And both games are frequented by alot of immature minds... Doesn't surprise me, actually.

I think in it of itself the Fallout series was an offensive game to many people.

Why? I think especially the famous "War. War never changes" has a lot of meaning into it. The canon is pretty strong, one could write many philosophical works about it. The wasteland maybe harsh, but it still has some "moral" into it, it's no blank paper everyone can write his stuff onto it. Especially not in a MMO whith actualy people playing it. And here comes:

But anyway, my problem is how does someone determine if something is offensive or offensive enough to deserve a ban, as it is clearly not stated in the rules.

Where I fully agree with you. The rules need to be better described.

I think you're mistaking words for acts here. Joking about al-Quaeda doesn't mean you support it, screaming "Allah Akbar!" in a computer game doesn't make you a suicide bomber. Joking about rape doesn't make you a rapist, neither does it make you supportive of actual rape (my GF used to joke about rape more often than I did, does that make her a psycho or a nymphomaniac? I hardly think so), saying "nigger" doesn't make you a supporter of slavery and actually doesn't even mean you're racist (hell, I'm a Pole and I consider most Polish jokes hilarious). In the end, it all comes down to your sense of humor and tolerance. If people get offended it actually is their problem, not the offenders', especially since most instances of producing "offensive content" aren't even malicious. To be honest, even if you consider offensive content harmful, shutting people up with violence (well, as funny as it sounds banning is the ultimate form of violence here, and obviously governments go way further irl) is more harmful than spouting bullshit itself. It all comes to freedom of speech, and being mature in my book doesn't mean you can't bear with the consequences (ie. people saying what they want), but rather being capable of living with it. And please do consider the fact that there are people on this Earth to whom your very existence is offensive and who would gladly kill you because of the way you live. You just can't please everyone, so why even bother? Extreme views or jokes get sidelined and removed from mainstream by the people anyway, because contrary to what some people believe common sense is, well, pretty common.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as calling Fallout a deep work of art, but I agree it's not entirely meaningless. I don't agree with your conclusion though - if people are playing it, it doesn't mean it should restrict their actions in any way - rather than that, it means that it's the people who decide whether the wasteland is harsh or friendly, moral or a cesspool. And honestly, a view GMs conducting guerilla warfare against the players and giving an occasional ban for the use of n- word or whatnot doesn't change a thing, and never will. You really can't influence how people think like that.

Where I fully agree with you. The rules need to be better described.

So what's stopping you guys from doing that? It's not like it's a new issue, really.

Actually, if we are speaking of this game/forum, it IS not "our" problem. We don't feel offended, we just see people breaking the rule. And I am glad I have other people in the team too that share my opinion of moral not even letting this bullshit hostile speech in it. I ofcourse don't get "offended" when someone is using Al Quaida shit, as I am no member of it nor do I have something to do with it. Also am I no "nigger", that doesnt stops me from finding it just bad. Activating common sense seems to be hard for some people in here. (we even had the n word discussion ago, there was no racism from human to human in the fallout world...  ::) ).
Otherwise, good post, even if I don't agree with all your points.

This isn't about freedom of speech. This is the internet equivalent of drawing penises on bathroom walls.

Pretty much he(Nice_Boat) summed up almost everything what I've said earlier, with minor differences on IRC. It's totally normal for people to behave differently in-game and in real life.

I agree, I don´t think it is about being offended by a nickname, but that immature people break the rules without consideration.

Well said, most people feel safe behind their monitor. Actually not many of them realise the fact that there is another person in front of other monitor. Even if it's far away from his home. Though, it's i-net, "the place where men are women, women are women and children are cops". I don't support any kind of racism, non tolerantive behaviour or insulting myself. But honestly, nicknames in game are the thing that should become lowest priority to care about for most people. But there's always kind of "problem"...

Because "it's only a game" ? Sorry, your argument is invalid. People are working everyday on this game, and racism is not tolerated here, nor in real life.

But honestly, nicknames in game are the thing that should become lowest priority to care about for most people. But there's always kind of "problem"...
They're not high priority, actually we only do something when we cross them. The "problem" here comes from people that make offending nicknames, get banned and whine here.

Well frankly I think people should be allowed to choose their own name which was the original topic not joking about rapists and suicide bombers, and if you don't like the guys nick name, PK him enough times so that he changes it. Welcome to the wonderful world of Fallout where you can kill anyone for any reason including that his big toe is bigger than your dick :p

One thing is an ingame thing (killing and stuff) other thing is a meta-gaming thing (those nicknames). Both have nothing to do with each other. If you constantly kill someone with a bad name he won't just disappear. If he gets banned when we cross them, he will disappear.
