Fallout Hardcore Style?
« on: July 23, 2010, 07:40:28 pm »

I've got some time to kill, and I feel like replaying the old Fallouts. To keep things fresh I'm thinking about trying it 'Iron-Man' style. Only one save, no reloading.

Has anyone ever tried this before? The biggest problem I can see is getting burned out by repeating the same parts of the game over and over if I die.

Anyone got any other restrictions to put forward to keep things challenging?

Besides not using Gifted and 'Rest Until Healed' (so I have to visit a doctor and pay to get patched up).

I want to try playing as a drug addict, but Fallout's addiction system is awful.

It's going to be like nethack.

Restrictions? No encounter farming or travelling in worldmap to get health or spending time to restock shops. Pay everything with money and exchange goods only for money. No gambling farming.

That seems like an awful lot of hell, my restrictions are i can only save in towns and whenever i make a drastic decision i force myself to stick with it without reloading game.

I don't do most of them, but I like the paying for everything only in caps rule.

I may try and be an evil character too, they tend to get the raw end of the deal.

But you can finish it without killing anyone except Frankie :) (Fallout 2).

Talking about hardcore mode for Fallout, I had a mod project - mod almost finished but computer crashed :/ - to make Fallout 2 much harder, because basically when you arrive in New Reno you get your first winchester, and I don't talk about the bozar used to kill Darion, etc, etc. The goal was to increase the survival aspect of the game. I suggest you to have max. 1-2 followers, not to tag Barter and not to farm random encounters (I never did it, never had the idea :D).

Hey, you can even not kill him yourself (with turrets and/or enclave guards) but sadly I think it's still displayed in your kill count.

Yes, it is displayed. That's why you must kill him :(

I'm not sure what difficulty to try it on. For F1 I'll crank up game and combat difficulty to rough, but I'm using a weapon mod with F2 that specifically recommends normal mode. Shame your mod got wiped, Izual, that sounds like it would've been a lot of fun. I have the habit of getting bored when my gear makes me a killing machine.

I'm also not orienting my build around perks - I can barely remember the requirements for any besides Toughness, so that's not really a problem. I'm thinking about only using first aid kits and doctor's bags (Can you use those in combat?) - no stimpaks. And sticking with pistols, just for the hell of it.

Anyone got anything else?

Yeah I have concluded Iron-Man is hard as balls. I'm abandoning that - I think it'd be survivable if your character was an absolute beast, but there's plenty of stuff that can go wrong in Fallout's combat that you have no control over.

I could do it with my current build, but that'd basically require me grinding my ass off in each area to guarantee I am definitely more powerful than the people I'm fighting.
