Guy tries to steal from me in town. Several times. Course, I can't do anything despite KNOWING he's doing just that (because what else is somebody doing running up to you when you're at a store and facing you?).

Finally, he fails. I pull a gun, but because I cannot initiate turn-based combat, and certainly not pull up the aimed shot screen, it's a game of cat and mouse.

I go toward the exit, wait there. He appears, gets hit once. Walks up to a guard, then starts jerk-moving back and forth.

Course, despite that my targeting reticule seemed to be on him, when I shoot it turns out to be at the guard instead.

Immediate -150 reputation with somebody, loss of about 16 hours worth of equipment (early level with no handouts). The kicker? He didn't get killed for looting my corpse, either, despite the fact that it was the guards that killed me.

So, yes. That works. Guess now I should simply accept the fact that I cannot defend even against stealing attempts I do spot.

I dont know wether or not you had a tent to unload your stuff but if you did you really should have unloaded your equipment before even attempting to shoot someone in a guarded town (sometimes the AI is unpredictable!).

Thieves are the scum of the wastes & NCR is full of the fuckers, it gets annoying when you want to Trade/Craft and you have all these thieves waiting around for their chance to strike. Its easy to see why you wanted to shoot the bastard!

Actually, I wanted to shoot him because before he failed steal attempt he already took all my caps and healing powder. Which actually was a lot of work for me to get. Also, I did not realize you could actually force somebody to shoot a guard like that.

Guess it's a price of lesson in game mechanics abuse.

I don't visit NCR. I was there twice, and left with the impression that it's best for me to avoid that place.

Actually, I try not to visit any town at all by now. When I do, it's a case of run in, do the business (trading - if it was possible to do it elsewhere, I wouldn't even set a foot in a town), get the fuck out.

Still doesn't help much, since as it was mentioned in the suggestion thread, the reward/penalty ratio for would-be thieves is so skewed it probably makes more sense to camp towns out and try to steal than go out and find valuables to sell.

Shit, with another friend to transfer the crap you get to you don't even have to bother about the penalty rep drop. Make a new char, and you're golden.

I play sniper char and sometimes come to ncr with something worthless (some ammo, caps, ropes..) in pockets just to hunt thiefs. I stand near traiders, walk around and such until they trying to steal from me, and then i cripple their legs, sometimes put them down and shot "free xp", newbies fa them then i put them down again and until death they everyone's playtoys.

that was a classic tactic better one is with finding a burst-shooting guard and standng in a line guard-victim-you, you shoot a player, guard bursts you, the victim gets damaged and dies. That was horribly popular just before wipe!
