I mentioned this solution a long while ago in a "fix shops" thread but people didn't seem interested.It's a nice idea provided that the engine supports multiple inventories per single NPC.
It will be awesome if you have this dialog choice if you have a high value of barter (eg 150 +) so a high barter skill give a good advantage (less real time used), and make who don't have it cry more ( camon pk scum, hate my merchant char more and more )

Ok, so what about the shelve system as in Fallout 2 (NCR and SF) where you clicked on a table then merchant began to speak to you...
[HERE a list opens]-show me everything-small guns- big guns- armor- ammo- miscellanous
- Energy guns
they don't count because armor is already in the list
