To whoever writes the new content for fonline
« on: April 30, 2010, 06:50:51 pm »

Could you please inbox me a text dump of all the dev created dialog so i can fix it? The new character quests, the sergeant in adytium, pretty much all of the new dialog is horribly written in broken english that I hope is a result of using babelfish. I will gladly correct all the grammar and spelling mistakes without changing the content of the text.

i would highly suggest getting alot of people to do it, things need alot of reviewing to be done properly
pass it to A who corrects it then passes it to B who corrects it who passes it to C, etc etc etc... you would be surprised as to how you can stare at something for hours and still not see it

review. review. review...

don't u forget? it's  post nuclear war reality. Maybe this new characters who gives u a quest's don't know grammar at all? maybe they was born in radiated area and got 1-4 INT?  ;)

if u are true RP, don't be too serious with this issue.

Sorry, but that's probably the dumbest thing I've read here for a while.
Typos, a few not so good translations or sentences have nothing to do with "True RP".

Those are just a few leftovers, not "RP".

Part of the reason the Fallout world is so enjoyable is the witty dialogue.  It sort of ruins things when I imagine every NPC talking like Borat.

if u ever played Fallout1/2 u should know what there was NPC *who talking like borat* Sulik for example, he's a tribal he don't know grammar(it's all about the  game atmosphere). And i don't mean what whole questgivers should talk like that.

There are many dialects of English.  The dialogue in Fonline reads like a Russian who has been speaking English for two years.  Sulik speaks like a caricature of idiocy, which was done intentionally for comedic effect.  These two things are not the same and if you are not able to distinguish between the two then you are not in a position to have an opinion about whether the grammar in the dialogue is up to par or not.

You can still post all the dialogues mistakes in one thread in the Bugs section, and devs will correct it.

Wouldn't that mean he'd have to manually copy them from the game? I mean surely a text dump does not present a security risk?

That would involve me making tons of new characters trying to get every possible game start location, not to mention multiple convo threads per NPC. I tried collecting screenshots but there's no way to be through. I can handle the text dump solo, my job is to do English proofreading for videogames, I worked on shit like yakuza 3.

Also sulik talked the  way he did because that's how they wrote his character, not because the devs were illiterate. Fonline isn't being made by people whom English is a first language so the quality of the writing is pretty bad. I'm not saying this to be insulting, I'd have a harder time trying to write in german or polish for instance.

No it's a terrible point, read that shit. That's not characterization, that's someone with a flimsy grasp of the language. There shouldn't be forum speak in game like "slowtard" if the devs are complaining that names and faction names won't fit the atmosphere. Ugly monkey asses just screams "I used babelfish" and the random unnecessary punctuation just hammers home that whoever wrote this doesn't speak english.

I must confirm, that until i started to play Fonline, my english was ok. Now, it is horrible. So  +1 to idea.

I am from generation of people, who learned english language from classic 2D point and click adventure games. Today, in our country, we have localizations for every bullshit games, it is worst than ever..

Well, I have to admit there are some flaws in it. But this example isn't THAT bad. ;) There are worse things ingame, concerning dialogues etc. Some typos also.
But I don't want to open a thread everytime when I encounter a typo, or a poor translated dialogue. I agree with you that it would be really usefull if a few helping hands'd take a look at the dialogue files.

I'd be happy to do it if you inboxed me the files, as I said I do this for a living and it bugs me to see easily fixed mistakes in a game I feel invested in.
