NPC factions and reputation changes
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:00:27 am »

First before reading my suggestion i recommend you to read this topic since it shows most problems for some npc factions: http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=3881.0 . Now as you read it you should understand, that roleplaying a raider or an enclave soldier gets really boring really soon since you are very limited in places you can visit, mines you can go to mine, and even these mines are problematic. If we assume that if player is enclave then he is loner, if he is loner then vc patrols is heavy test for him if he wants to go to only mine where he wont be attacked. Same is with raiders, you can visit only two mines and san francisco mine is very far away, while vc mine is impossible to visit due to raiders hostile vc patrols. My suggestions purpose is to make more or less all npc factions playable, not  only vc citizens. So let the introduction begin:

I suggest to separate all factions into classes. So

Military factions

Unity
Brotherhood of steel
Enclave

Religious factions

Hubologists
Followers of the apocalypse
Unity

City based factions

Vault city
Raiders

Slavery related factions

Slavers guild
Vortis Slavers
NCR rangers

New Reno mafia

Bishop family
Wrights
Salvatores
Mordinos

All other existing factions follows in the "others" category and reputation doesnt change with player being in any of these factions. Now that we have faction classes i suggest one important suggestion that could solve many problems for RP in npc factions. If you join for example military faction (thus unity, BOS, enclave) then only other military factions vilifies you, all other classes doesnt give a shit. It means that if you are enclave you can go to all towns, and just unity mutants and bos patrols will kill you. Same with being in all other factions :>

Another suggestion is to make relations between factions in different classes. For example we have relation between Raiders - Bishop family - NCR. So if i Join vault city, factions related with raiders also gives me negative reputation with them just at lower percentage. So if with raiders i am vilified (-2000 reputation), with bishop family i will be hated (-1000) and with NCR i will have antipathy (-300) reputation. But only the first faction of this reputation attacks me on sight, if i fix my reputation with other they treat me well. Other faction relations i suggest.

Brotherhood of steel - (all towns that bos have offices in Den, SF, NCR)
Enclave - Salvatores
Vault city - Redding - All caravans/FLC
Unity - BH mutants/BH ghouls - Necropolis ghouls/Gecko ghouls
Raiders - Bishop family - NCR
Slavers - Vortis Slavers - Vault city
NCR rangers - NCR
Mordinos - Slavers/Redding
Salvatores - Enclave
Bishop family - Raiders

So what do you think of my suggestion. Maybe you have some useful improvements on it? Express your opinion by voting and commenting :>

I agree, I think the NPC factions could be tweaked at a little. Not nessisarily totally changed, but I think they could be polished a bit more. Perhaps to make it so people dont just flip between gangs.

At the moment most people only join the Enclave and Raiders to get the professions. Also its really easy to join these gangs.

Especially the Enclave, it should be really difficult to get into the Enclave and also it should be next to impossible to leave- at least make it really tough. Like you have to fake your own death or somthing.

yeah i agree that joining factions should be harder. While vc is a city and should welcome outsiders kinda easy military factions should be much harded to join than using mentats and giving shitty bullets.

VC is a pretty bad example when it comes to "welcoming outsiders" as said in the other topic. :D
They barely let someone in,  Citizenship is (thanks to the test each one has to solve) neatly impossible to get for the average wastelander, day passes should also be much harder to get.

In this sense NCR should be much more easier to join.

Quote from NCR history holodisk "But what if my entire town wants to join?
Depending on where your town is located, NCR does accept petitions by villages, towns, bases, city-states, even minor kingdoms for annexation by NCR."

How interesting to see some one has predicted that your entire base can join NPC faction

well as i remember f2, to be vc citizen you had to buy fake citizenship papers and do the test with your 10 IN :D Joining enclave wasnt possible at all, and boss had quite heavy task (this similar in f1 and f2) :> Simply talking now you can "buy in" yourself into these military factions, its not right, you have to have their respect to be allowed to join and job or several jobs should be kinda mean and probably take more then one drug usage. If you would look at bos and enclave patrols and their huge stats, you should understand that not every jerk can become member of elite military factions. :>

You could even fail the test with 10 IN, if I remember correct you even have to have a high number in Luck and Endurance or so. And with the fake citizen pass it was possible guards notice that its faked etc. :D

But still I agree with Ou, it should be much harder joining an NPC faction, but granting at the same tine a few unique benefits to prevent players fromfaction hopping...

talking about bos i think it should have workbench with additional tools like one in raiders base, so people in bos wouldnt need to go to damn sierra for 7.62 mm :>
