Repeatable Missions
« on: April 18, 2010, 11:14:20 pm »

In the light of the success of the Rail Gang mission and the Dogs of LA, I'm going to ask: How hard is it to have similar missions with randomised critters? I'm just giving the example of Extermination/Assassination for now.

Extermination

Go to an NPC in a bar in town. Ask for work.

If you're level 1-3 you get one dialogue option asking for work, if you're level 3 - 6 you get another, and so on. The quest randomly chooses some critters for you to fight in a map outside of town. The lower level, the weaker the critters. The bigger your party, the more critters. You have to kill them all, and report back. Woo.

The pay is dependent on the number of critters killed. Maybe 15 caps for every rat, and 500 per deathclaw for example.

Assassin

You go to a location and have to kill all the humans inside. Random number of humans, their strength proportional to your level. If you're in a group, same again, there's more of them.

That's all I got. At this stage I'm just wondering if it's possible to easily randomise the content of locations while still keeping it proportional to level.

I guess someone's bored of Monte Carlo?  :P

No, I'm totally for this idea. I actually quite enjoy these Monte Carlo-Fetch Somethin' - Quests as it is totally random, I never know which crazy thing he wants next.
As you said, the Rail Line Gang or Dogs of LA quests set the track for a few more of these kind. Besides the "Kill X numbers of critter Y" there could also be "Dang, a former friend of mine stole my bag full of caps in Location XY. Here's the deal - bring it back to me and we share the loot 50:50. Maybe you'll get a little bonus if you catch me in the right mood" etc. to prevent "WoW" Quests...

I did ask if any of the players were interested in coming together to make some of these. I think they are time consuiming rather than difficult.

Only 2 asked about it, I'm not sure what they've got up to at the moment. But yes, lots of these things spread about the place would be good in my opinion.

Some new reno crime family: "go blast some ncr's brahmins"

Mr. Westin in ncr: "Someone's blasting mah brahs, go protect them"

Would put people together.

We had similar plans, which run under the topic "scenarios". There are many possibilities, but everything needs to be timed. Else group A is going to blast the brahmins and group B was waiting there already since 2 hours or the brahmins are already dead when they arrive, etc... Such stuff is better done with NPCs.

Hmm, how difficult would it be to have two separate questgivers saying 'Come back here at noon'. The quest runs every hour, and has some kind of level limit. They won't pitch levels 5s and level 21s together, for example. When the mission starts they're both instantly teleported to either end of an instanced map. If no other group is prepared to be on the other team, you just fight NPCs.

The same could work with caravan missions. You go to Far Go Traders if you want protection missions, you go to Crimson Caravans if you want to attack people. Everybody knows they run at noon on the 3rd/9th/12th/15th/etc. Hell, we could even pin that to the town noticeboards.

Thoughts?

I guess I am totally screwed when he asked for 9 radscorpion tails. Can I pay him to cancel previous jobs?

Edit:

NPC factions should have unique repeatable quests/unique rewards just for the reason to be part of that faction i.e.

VC: scout map, clean small raider hide out, retrieve Hi-tec stuff gecko reactor construction site etc. Rewards could be medical supplies

Same here, 9 flowers. I just stopped doing the quests. Which was a shame, because I quite enjoyed them.

And because it runs so often, it shouldn't have too dire consequences if you didn't win/participate. Maybe after 100 caravans there could be some bigger consequences.

It doesn't even have to function as an actual caravan and drag you around the map. It just needs to teleport you and have the people on the other side of the map marked as hostile, register who's won, and teleport them back.

10 packs of ciggs >_>.  Plus doing that 'fetch me big book of science' cost me more to optain one than reward.

I'm really looking forward for some longer and more xp rewarding mission (repeatible but not as often as modoc quests). Maybe some group quests. Either way it should take more efford and give more reward. Dragging my mates to Boneyard to get 500 xp from dogs is well ... not something I've been realing looking for.

How about Missions from the Various Factions?

Like BoS: "Investigate Marked Spot on the WorldMap"
As you gain more Reputation/Rank: "Destroy/Kill something"
Enclave: "Same as BoS"?
Raiders: "A Caravan is coming by at (Blabla) raid the Caravan" (Additional Raiders are following you for this Part of the Quest)
Counterpart of the Raiders Quests: Escort Caravan to NCR/Vault/etc (If no Raiders are participating at the Quest, there might be no Encounter)

I just shot my Suggestion in the Thread. It doesn't mean, that I go directly for it. It means that I roughly think of repeatable Quests for the Factions aswell, as they don't have a big purpose atm.

I like all the ideas here. I'm all for repeatable missions or scenarios and all that.
Gives the player always something to do.
