Traders carrying to much crap
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:35:29 am »

I think traders carry too much crap in their inventory. Only a short time has passed since the wipe and already bust in NCR has hundereds of shotguns and SMGs on him. My suggestion is somthing like this;

Every 15 mins buster will "drop" excess weapons out of his inventory. So he will keep 3 shotguns on him and the rest will dissapear into a hidden box. Every 2 mins between this 15 min drop one of the excess items in the box will be broken down into base parts. Buster will then gain these base parts (metal, junk, wood etc) as if he had used high science on the item. He will then also gain a little bit of money for each item broken down.

Now obviously this needs careful planning out otherwise the traders will become mini foundries where people just throw crap items at them so the shops inventory is full of crafting materials. But I still think its a good idea and needs to be done, its silly to see a trader with 100s of shotguns - no one would keep that many.

The other option is the same as before but instead of breaking down the items he could just destroy the item in exchange for a few caps (Less than the selling price) or maybe a few caps and a few crafting materials. Perhaps even have it so that the trader sells the base materials for caps only, but sells them for much more than the player asking price. This way people with lots of money to waste can come in and buy many materials they need to build things and the other players are happy because now the shop keeper has a load of money on him.

Also a feature similar to the one in Fallout Tactics would be nice where the shopkeeper automatically puts money up for things you offer him.

Yeah, traders need to be more ruthless and frequent with getting rid of crap.

It's already done.
Every day or less traders turn junk items into caps. Problem is that shotguns are probably what he's supposed to be selling.

Just trade anywhere else other than NCR and you'll have 1/3 of the items in shop.

I think we could do with tweaking prices a little too. Nobody's going to pay $400 for BBs. I only really buy 10mm. And people should be buying shotgun shells like hotcakes, but they're so expensive people either craft them or sell them - nobody seems to be buying them. Maybe I'm wrong. If you buy shotgun shells in bulk, do say so.

Traders already clean their inventories. Crap will only remain in a traders inv for a short while (in the order of an hour)

$4 for BBs compared to $10 for 10mm jhp, its pretty cheap. Hopefully when we add the LE version of the BB gun they'll be slightly more useful

Yeah, but proportional to their power it's not really worth it. I don't think I've seen anybody using a BB gun in combat, turn based or realtime. 10mm have pretty heft damage output and are still pretty easy to get your hands on, compared to the pretty piss-weak BBs. I'd rather bump their ammo capacity down to 20 and give them a damage buff. Obviously the LE serves as a slightly more powerful BB gun, not the ridiculous monster it was in the original.

BBs are great for a crit guy, but like most weapons could do with a bit of balancing.

There was so much crap in one shop I had to try 3 times before the countdown allowed me to get the stuff I wanted. Seriously what kind of salesman won't allowe his customers to browse through his stuff?

Not anymore. The barter skill timeout still needs fixing, yes

For the sake of our forefingers the shop inventories need some sort of system to keep the supplies in order, not spread around. Perhaps the whole screen have to be re-arranged because the shopscreen in fallouts never was particularly user-comfortable.

Yeah remove it altogether. Or make it the same for everybody.

I vote this. It's nice in theory, but in an MMO it's just a waste of time.

But I also vote for the merging of a lot of skills, which is never going to happen.

Just cheat using a Logitech MX1100 :p

I already suggested maybe creating separate inventories where a shopkeeper can store ammo, energy weapons, big guns, etc. that would be accessible via dialogue. Much easier than an GUI overhaul.
Provided characters can have more than one inventory at a time.
