It is the end of the ancient mayan callendary, which only happens once a 5000 years or so. I never liked any of the media hype bullshit around it, but goddamn it, hell yes, it is a "special day".
Also "the end of the world" theme fits perfectly with a post-apocalyptic game, doesn't it? I'm not saying this is a good suggestion... just sayin'.

That's pretty much the same logic as "I don't know why we should celebrate the birth and death of some ancient magician guy who got crucified". Can't really argue though.
