Unfortunately, I made a hatchet last night and then lost it in the wastes, now i've spent all day trying to get one peice of wood so i can make another, and havent had any luck.

Where can I get wood without a hatchet?

You can either get flint from mountain squares to turn into primitive tools, which can be used to chop wood, or if you're really feeling fancy you can use science on looted guns and get wood that way.

well the problem is, ive made primitave tools, and have sofar been unable to use them on trees. it says, ''that does nothing'' when i try.
This is based on both me equipping the primative tool, and targeting the tree, and clicking the tree, drag to backpack icon, and click tools.

Do you have the right kind of tree? Only the ones with the hand icon will yield wood.

In my experience the best way to find wood is city ruins. Just walk on the map until you find some little light brownish squares which resamble city ruins (for example a few squares left and down from NCR near the Brotherhood of Steel and the desert). The big city area around the south and south west coast works too of course.

Enter the encounter by clicking on your position arrow on the map.
You will encounter different settings of the city ruins map-type.
One or two of them have choppable trees.
If you don't get one of those maps at your first try, just leave to worldmap and enter again - you don't have to move on the world map for a different encounter-map.

You can also find tons of junk in those maps, which is used to craft other items and weapons.

also you have to actually click on the tool and "use on" the trees, i found that just equipping it and clicking a tree does nothing

Do wood in bases regrow, by the way? Just asking, because tobacco and fibers at Outpost dont. I even used waterbags on plants, it does nothing.
