You could try "Anarchy Online".

It has a high learning curve, generally nice people and endless possibilities. It's free without the expansions. Aside from normal armor and weapons there is also the feature of "implants" to boost your skills. The professions you can play are original: aside from the soldier and enforcer you can walk the path of a fixer, engineer, beaurocrat, trader, doctor and others. Lots of fun crafting too.

I am currently back there. When I'm tired of fonline I go there and vice versa.
