random attacks on bases

you should have random attacks on bases. random raiders decide to take your shit?
FIGHT EM OFF
super muties hungry and want your crops?
SHOOT EM IN THE HEAD!
zombie want your flesh?
BOOM HEADSHOT!
hay, if random enimies go after your base, you would have to defend it. that large wall around the outpost in kind of useless concitering there is no attacks.
make it useful, and implement turrets that run on energy cells (mfc or small), and have to be manualy fed ammo. they would be put onto the bases computer for identifying frend or foe and parts should be craftable at hotspots. like 50 metal parts for the shell, 20 alloys for the caseing and useing minerals to make lenses and to use as luberkent (graphite).

Have you ever wondered why there's POWER GENERATORS in bases?
I guess they power the terminal and light in normal case. But they're over 200 years old.

If you hook an additional power consumer, like a turret, they begin to take damage.
So you have to repair and maintain them on regular basis. Or else...

It's Wasteland.
Not only players roam around but you may get a visit from deathclaws, mutants, raiders, whatever.
Maybe some critter took your trail and followed to your camp, so you have to kill it.
That's where your defense comes in handy. Just be sure not to stand in the line of fire.

Oh, cool idea. I like it!

you buy a base, collect stuff, hire mercs, then come back to base, mercs are slayed, stuff is taken and a note "alliens from mars attacked"... cool feature bro...

Space is harsh, you know?
Fat chance that aliens would be attacking, instead of rats or raiders, but you will have to check your base defenses more thoroughly.

So basically put up a 24/7 player watch in front of the entrance if you're in a small gang? I thought something like that up on a party with my mate... when we were both really drunk. It went somewhat like this:
- Hey, wanna play military?
- Sure, what are you planning?
- Well, remember that grocery store we were passing on our way? You go there, stand at attention and report back to me every 30 minutes using your cellphone.
- F**k off.

...the only difference being we were actually joking, and you are being serious about implementing something like that in a game that already has a lot of boring parts  ::)

Not really. You have mercs and turrets, ain't it? The only thing about guarding is to supply them with ammo.
A few rats or marauders every 6 hours won't be a problem dealing with, unless the mercs and slaves shoot themselves in the process.

Also, some NPC might follow you to your base. A hungry deathclaw ought for your brahmins for example - so you can grab a ready gun at the entrance and blast it to pieces. Or your guards take care of it.

Critters picking your trail would make permanent entrie/exits more dangerous, and guards would make more sense.

Or perhaps make theme attackable only if some Real Player is in there depending on the amount of players there

One instance where this might actually make sense would be if you build a faction base right next to ncr. If whole ncr hated your faction they could try to wipe your base out by sending patrols.

I think that idea of base being vullnerable to some NPC/player attacks is not bad, but it has to be balanced. It would require some effort to protect the base (providing ammo for mercs making them really useful) and would give at last some feeling of threat in base, while it was totally safe before.
However the chance of being attacked shouldn't be too big so that it won't cause every small or not-yet-prepared gang base being constantly raped by other players.

Why not make it just like with the TC system?

When you have a base, you can decide what hour is going to be your hour for Base Defence (?) and during that time span you better be watching your property. Important here is that the owner can choose the timeframe, since some people play only at specific hours. And also, the strength of the oncoming forces could be dependent on which base you bought. The higher the price, the stronger the attacker. Or it could be dependent on the number of people in the gang. Or a combination of those 2. Of course having mercs for defence would be advised, as well.

If you still think that this would be boring, you could set the timespan to 10-30 minutes, rather than 1 hour. Or even make it happen every 2nd day, or 1 day a week. It doesn't have to be a major feature of the game. Just something to add atmosphere.

I also like like the idea of critters following a player to his base.

You could also implement a handicap period for the first week, where your base would not be attacked at all, and later on a holiday-mode. Let's say One week for every month. After all, its a game ^^ You activate it for 1 to 7 days and again, you're protected against attacks for this amount of time.

brilliant idea to npclizing blubber, with a combination of high PE & outdoorsman you can get a warning before entered the loction, also npc followers should not follow you to guarded cities. It should have some similarities to mysterious stranger.

I think a tent could be infested by rats/scorps/geckos if you havent' visited it for 3days or so
As for base I would propose a retaliation raid by npc factions, so think twice before fuck around with Enclave or Unity patrol. The problem is how to schedule the attack and synchronize with player presence.
