Is it possible to always stay inside my tent? Is there a vault I can join?

Hello. I am downloading this game now and am a new player. I've read that this game has some really harsh PVP and environment and read that tents are safehavens. Is it possible for me to permanently stay in my tent so no one will get me?

Also can I join a vault colony?

Not really; you would have to start one.

If you permanently stay in your tent, you're going to have a very, very boring time playing this game.

The best bet is to leave valuables there, and don't take out anything you aren't willing to lose until you gain enough levels to survive easier, or get used to the game enough to avoid dangerous situations, etc.

Tents are evil, don't trust them.

If you spend a month without going in your tent, it will disapear.
If you build a new tent, the previous one will disapear.
If someone follows you in your tent, he will kill you and get all your stuff.

Also, there is, in your tent, only what you bring in it. So, if you want something, you'll have to go outside sometimes.
