Do you really think that a mercenary with 180 or 300 hp is level one? They spawn with random levels.
Yes.

False. Their starting HP depends on a variety of buyer's SPECIAL skills... I think avv made a post about what gets the best starting HP.
All mercs start at level 1.

Beware, there are bugs that make you lose your followers for good. If you or they die, chances are they won't respawn at the meeting point.

The three companions ive had have disappeared.

It seems to me if u manaully move them during combat and dont set them back to auto move b4 u leave the map, they will not follow u or appear at ur main tent, they just disappear.

im about 70% sure this is the case.

Would be nice if hints like that were on the Slavery page on wiki.

Why buy mercs? When you can get moonshiners to use any weapon :/ or farm the Mercs in the cave encounters near BH.

because mercs have good stats and better : one merc more = one slave more.

also, as i know, combat slave (moonshiners) don't lvl up and have poor skills. http://fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/Combat_Slave

Best get one and see for yourself. Then write about it on wiki.

Mind, that only those slaves with base HP (again number is outdated on wiki) do level UP.

According to my knowledge there were leveling combat slaves with 4X/5X something hp they leveled as I know but I never had any like that. Ghouls are supposed to level too the 93 hp ones haven't tested them yet though.
I would say to choose a mercenary or companion to level since their loyalty is easier to keep.
About the low skills of combat slaves yeah they have low skills but they have enough ST for all weapons and miniguns have the accurate perk, flamers are ok since they have low range, and about rockets before wipe out of 5 shot 2 usually hit the target from a not so far distance.
