Tribes series was never about skill really. Simply get the altitude advantage over your enemy and spam disc/explosives. Also Dynamix acknowledged skiing as a movement based exploit but never cared to fix the engine so now it lives as some sort of nostalgic 'oldschool' flavor.

But damn, was ATF mod fun. Jesus really knew how to make a realistic game mode. 

Uh... what? getting attitiude and spamming discs? No you didn't... You gotta go fast man. The faster you are moving the less chance of hitting you there is. I've been in a lot of duels (when two players meet in somewhere on map and fight just with each other) and sure getting in the air helps a lot in avoiding attacks and properly marking your owns but here comes tactic. YOU NEVER FIGHT BACK when you are out of energy or life. Gotta slide away regenerate and get into another attempt. It's all about movement to be honest. Shooting appears to be less important (especially that most played mode is CTF where you can win without putting a single bullet/disc/nade into enemy).

Hey, there are still custom player-kept servers for Starsiege Tribes the original. Low-end system FPS game with jetpacks, hightech guns and hovercraft player transports. My favourite FPS ever, I really recommend it over this one, but just for real old schoolers.
