I don't really think this tradition is "cruel", I think that was just a bad word Eternauta used. I am sure most of the people (boys and the girls) have fun and don't take it serious, especially when everyone else is doing it since god knows how long and it has been always done in your country. That's cool, I don't think anyone else has something against it (each country has it's fair share of "retarded" traditions and such). I think Eternauta meant the symbolism this tradition looks like - men are the alphas, let's spank the fuck out of the weaker girls. Atleast that's how it looks like initially if one doesn't know the background of it.

To make it clear, it's pretty much like Surf said, I think traditions like this keep male domination present symbolically, and by the way the fact that most women enjoy or even accept it doesn't mean anything (many women from muslim countries accept the treatment they get).

I have nothing against the Czech people or Czech traditions in particular, just against any tradition that keeps these kind of power relationships even on a symbolical level. These kind of stuff exists all around the world and not only in that country.

I never thought the Czech people was cruel, I was only speaking about this tradition, which is what the topic is about anyway. It was the Czech users who replied, who thought I said they were cruel.

Replying to Sarakin, Lordus did not "enlighten" anything: he just typed some explanation about his country's history, and then trolled me about my country's history. If he had not added that last part, the discussion would have taken a different road. I find it funny that I cannot dare to think anything bad about your tradition but you can make jokes about my country or even call me liberal pussy, etc. And it's even funnier that people say "it's the internet!" as this meant it's ok to joke about genocides, racism, sexism, etc.

The thing is that essentialy, most of the people have no idea how those traditions are percieved in the country and by the girls themselves. And trust me that, we are not gonna give up that tradition, one of the few remainings in our country, because of some oversensitive outsiders that has seen some video of drunk jacasses hitting the girls with wooden sticks.

The real hypocrite for me is the guy that thinks that women are some weak minded souls that are kept in vassalege by this tradition. Give them some credits, will ya? This year I have been to northern Spain and I have seen completly diffrent traditions, more christian oriented. One of them was a parade with guys carrying statues from church through the streets. There were also little children, all dressed up in the robes. It was cold, like 10 degrees and the kids were barefoot, walking for more then an hour through the streets.
Maybe you guys should check for child abuse.

Who the hell was talking about that you should "give up" your traditions ? Most people (including me) don't really care about it, we only responded how this thingy looks to an outsider - which was the reason this thread was opened in the first place.

No one said that women are "weak" aswell, you are implying it.
