This tradition is so strongly rooted in our country that we don't even think about it as it was something weird or bad. Both sides, girls and boys like and enjoy the tradition and nobody here could imagine these holidays without it.

Reasons why I love this tradition:
1) When I was a kid, I always got few bags of chocolate.
2) It is a reason to get drunk.
3) I can spank sisters of my friends without their brothers trying to stop me.

Also I haven't seen the "bucket of water" part in my life (though I know it is sometimes also used as defense against the spankers) The easter rituals are a bit different depending in which region of CzechoSlovakia you happen to live.

 Of course that there is not any obligation to open, but i cant remember at any case of closed doors. It is quite different in cities or country side. In country side, in villages, most people knows each other, so you can knock almost to every doors. In cities, you visit your classmates, girlfriends, girlfriends of friends, their mothers and sister, family, teachers. Fathers sometimes open doors silently and let us to whipe their daugther unexpectedly.

 The major problem was on high school, because we had to plan our route precisely, to avoid visitation of our teachers in noticeable drunk state.

In Argentina, older people give chocolate eggs or rabbits to younger people (generally, parents to their children, uncles/aunts to nephews/nieces, grandparents to their grandchildren, etc). And we don't need to hit women for that, in fact, girls get chocolate as well!
