Hey,
sometimes I wonder, why do people play computer games at all... Looking at it from rational point of view it is just a waste of time and making something that doesn't have any sense, just clicking and taping keyboard...
However, I do, so there must be some reason :P

Taking it from that point of view, everything is pointless, since at a certain point we all must die.
I play computer games (and games in general) as an hobby/drug.
If it was an hobby, I would be one that makes it as a professional.
If it was a drug, i would be a junkie in a costant state of overdose.
 ;) ;D ;D
Just jokin'. I play them because i like 'em.

Why do people watch movies? Why do people go to the theatre? Why do people make/listen to music? Why do people collect stuff? Why do people draw, paint?

Because it is fun/entertaiment. Nothing more, nothing less. The same applies for videogames.
Also - you may change your threadtitle. No one can get a single clue about what this "Discussion" is about from the title.

People play games and do other "senseless" activities to have some fucking fun. The "capitalist society" tends to separate fun from work (otium and nec otium), searching for productivity and efficiency.

However, it sometimes happen that the very logic of the nec otium (that is, the search for maximum productivity), which is after all dominant in our society, gets into our recreational activities. This happens in FOnline for example, where players tend to create alts for every single activity, for maximum efficiency. This is usually when the game becomes "boring".

Of course. Everybody plays for different reasons. I think the main reason is to have fun, to bring something more "funny" in our lives.
Why do you eat, if you must defecate everything? Why do you breathe, if everything goes out at the end? Why do you live, if you must die?
At the end, i think that everything might be answered with a very simple word: "Boh!" ;D

Dunno why I play really.  I would say fun I guess.  Not sure these days.

Maybe it's just a hobby.  Or an addiction ???

Part of the answer lies in the fact that we are not "Controlled" to play video games.  We don't have anybody paying us to play the game, we don't have anyone taking out the whip to play either.

Our intrinsic motivation has led most of us here to video games because it's something we are interested in for various reasons.  (usually defined as "fun")

However when we are given the "Do this and you'll get that" control, we lose interest, and ultimately begin hating what we do.  Same thing would go to video games if such were the case.

That's how I can sum it up however, without taking up several feet long in text up to down.

Not really. I prefer playing my games alone, with pacing that I control, I can take my time etc. I usually don't enjoy playing videogames with other people, especially random people over the internet.

I played games when I was little kid, I even learnt my english only in games, I'm playing it to remember good times, probably that's why I don't like almost all games which were released after ~2000-2002, I like to play good old games like Master of Orion 1/2, Doom 1/2, Icewind Dale 1/2, MAX, Dungeon Keeper 2, Settlers 1/2, X-Com 1/2, Fallout 1/2, Arcanum, M&M 6/7, Heroes 1/2/3, JA2, Daggerfall, Morrowind. May be some other, any other games aren't interesting for me as I don't feel anything good when playing them. Also it looks like people forgot how to make games properly, all those new games are crap in comparison to XX century games.

Playing Icewind Dale 2 or some other similar DnD with your friends is one of the best ways how to spend your time playing.

So true. It is a very rare occasion that I enjoy a game which is released these days. Perfect example how the lust for $$$ can ruin everything.

Never tried it, but I can imagine it's fun. Though - again it would get a bit ruined for me since I wouldn't be able to take my time, take a break whenever I want etc. - it just doesn't really work for me. Nice that you mention IWD - as I'm playing it just right now and just alt tabbed out of the game (this is what I mean with those "breaks). ;)

With fonline it's an addiction, trust me you lend your flash drive with game on it out or go on camping trip and you'll want to play so bad you'll be dreaming about making stuff and hunting ghouls. :P
