If you forget to hide weapon, after warning guards will aim your hand ONLY and will stop shooting as soon as weapon drops on floor or you hide it. Then they give you warning that next time they kill you.

This should work only once / life, if you draw another weapon they shoot to kill. Also if you commit real crime (like attack someone) they shoot to kill.

Probably not worth the scripting work, considering low levels can easly die anyway, but I thought it's a neat idea so I post it :P

Indeed, rather useless as low-levels would still die unless the guards have BB guns which still have a chance to do insta-kills  ;D I like the idea however, the damage could be made for guards only so they do only 50% damage but have 99% to disarm the weapon holder.

You can't insta-kill by shooting hand.
You can  8)
With floaters.
Shooting thier "right hand slot" has the same consequences as shooting thier "eyes slot", but requires on 1 less AP and have less to hit penalty. If it wasn't changed from last wipe, but I believe it wasn't, as you still can kill molerats in the eyes.

About suggestion, you already said that low levels have low HP, they will die from hand shots anyway, as if it'll be not critical, guards will continue shooting till drop, if it'll be critical the damage will be so high that he wouldn't be able to drop weapon because of death. May be they should use clubs? ^_^ And if you're not protected then they will shoot until you're dead. This way, poor noobs who entered inner town with shovel or hammer or other fearsome weapon will be punched by clubs into hands and weapon will be picked up by nearest guard after (or by that player who pressed "G" button too much).

Well, I've never seen an NPC do an insta-kill (I mean actual insta kill, not just 200+ damage from plasma rifle) on a player anyway, but that's besides the point.

If the warning showed up in red caps in the text box of the person who has the weapon (but not other peoples' text boxes), it would probably be easier to script. But, as useless as it might sound, it couldn't hurt anything more than current feature. Though, this isn't realistic at all.

May be they should use clubs?

I was thinking about that, in case someone blocks no-block hex, they could club them away not kill on spot.
But this would be tricky, because melee would actually block blocker.

Same could be done for gun holding but aim hand.

I understand the frustration of being shot because of absent-mindedly entering lower NCR with weapon or tool with weapon function in the active slot.

Hand-shooting is a bit contrived- how about more warnings or just a karma-drop timer: 1 karma point lost per second with gun/offensive item out in the danger zone.

Or both.

This way they just keep warning you until you become Vilified.
Then you die in a hail of gunfire.

Making sledgehammer not count as a weapon will probably mitigate half of the noobs that die due to this.

No one is going to take over the town with a Sledgehammer. Seriously. They should be using a Sharpened Spear instead!

i can see alot of bugs with this....

As I said, the best would be making guard luck equal to 10, make the hand shots deal only quarter damage, and guards get some more bonus to criticals when shooting at hands.

The best would be to have meaningful warning system - like NPCs aiming they rifles at offender, or at least cocking their weapons so you hear something. The best would be to have voice over, but that'd require some high quality job.

Why? Police forces usually dont try to kill criminals, just to incapacitate and imprison them.

No, just that technically policemans try to catch criminals, so that a judge can say "Dip them into acid!" and see them being dipped in acid. Or just, for the simple fact of being policemans, they have a minimum of moral sense. Otherwise they would just be mercs.
