My suggestion, is if someone types "lol" or any form of it, like lulz, or "umadbro?" or things like that, that they will suddenly explode with the force of 300% traps skill TNT.

I like the rough idea, but think it would be better if they were hunted down and killed (like with the bounty hunters in the SDK). Something like this :


Why do you even care what others write as long as it is not offensive ?


[...]who decides what words should and shouldnt be allowed ?


If this gets implented I will keep running around NCR saying "lol" in crowded areas. :)

Great pictures Luther, cracked me up a ton.  :D

I'm pretty sure that the game Team Fortress 2 has a language filter on one of it's maps that converts everything into Old English (such as turining 'lol' into 'lollery' and cussing into 'By the balls of Bacchus!'). Hilarity is ensured.
I quite like the idea. I get a tad sick of improper grammer and things spelt in cryllic to a certain extent.
As long as the message still gets through (possibly in a more casual sense then 'I articulate my laughter correctly, in your face!'  ;)) I see no problem with this idea.

Implementation is a different matter altogether.

Langage filter could be too harsh sometimes.

For instance, in some games, i can't be called naossano, because it is considered as nazi related.
So the filter can't let me enter words that are not offense, only because the bot finds it too close to his wrong words list.

On the contrary if you forbid only exact words, you could have easy abuse. (l0l.. instead of lol for instance)

Even if it starts with good purposes, the langage filter can't be really effective.
(Preventing good words or allowing bad words with little changes)

Even with an human instead of a bot, it can't be abused...

Agreed and I guess that's why I was thinking this could be useful as a way of turning lazy acronyms (lol and such) into shortcuts for real words.

In that sense it wouldn't be a ban of those words, just a lazy mans communication/emotive system.

Perhaps in the 3D era acronyms like "LOL" and "ROFL" could actually even trigger an animation instead of the character saying anything at all. 

I know the original suggestion was too harsh (I'm pretty sure it was a joke anyway :p) and I know that a lot of people are sick of others trolling (myself included) but I think that the suggestion has some merit when you look at it practically. Not everyone 'Lols' because they want to sound like a troll, some people are just used to typing like that and I don't think they would mind it triggering something with more character. People who truly want to lol instead of laugh could still do so with either with a different spelling or /o.

That's a really interesting idea - along with other "flavour animations" for things which people currently type out. As far as I can see, it's probably doable as well. It might need a special way of typing, like "/lol" or *lol* or something, so as not to clash with any other words with "lol" in them... of which I can't think of any. Not sure if anyone would want to animate a genuine "ROFL" though - but perhaps a "LMAO" could be useful for ghouls :)

Unfortuantely not. I live in a former convict colony and the language quite often reflects that perfectly.  :P

I agree with this wholeheartedly. It would be great to see people actually laughing when such things are typed.
Through a more used 'flavour animation' in Fonline would be /cry.
I'd LMAO at Ghouls laughing their ass off.

i know, i was just running with the example and I'm sure there are lots of other shorthand acronyms that can be used as shortcuts for more 'wastelandish' terminology, but which could also still be used just as now, out of character.
