Put Mercenaries as Base guards
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:11:24 pm »

I don't know if it was already proposed, but i didn't see it in the suggestion tracker.

What i think it would be great, is the ability to assign to any of his follower (merc/slave/animal) a place to guard, permanently.

This follower would leave you a free slot, and remains on the same map, for the rest of his life.

The requirements :

- The place should be yours : If that is a tent, you need to have built it. If that's a base, you need to be a member* (trusted, important, or leader)
- The number should be limited : 1-2 for a tent, 10-20 for a base
- The guard can never be fired or moved to guard an other place. As long as he is alive, he stays there.

(if the player is removed of the faction, the mercenary is given to the leader)

After that, we can consider him into different kind of npc.

- Regular merc, that you can trade with, talk with, move from one place to another, (as long as you stay on the map), give the same orders than usual.
- You can't talk to them, only trade to resupply them. They move by themselves, on preconfigurated path. (like militia). You can give general order to the whole group, by the base computer, if you are the leader or an important member. (or talk to the only merc in a tent)
- No control at all, but no need to ressupply them. They get extra hp and defend members of faction only when attacked. A regular militia, but for bases. (if that's a tent, the 1-2 militian will only defend the tent builder)

If there is no player in the base/tent, these guards are the only one who will automatically shoots ennemies.
Any other followers would only stand there. (a player there can still order them to attack)

The purpose of this
- Reduce the ammount of merc alt, for base guard.
- Make free slot for those who don't want to alt.
- Have the ability to draw path, to make moving npc in bases (more life in bases)
- Put a real limit to the number of guarding mercs.

90% have mercenaries in their base.
Why wouldn't we make it official ?

before some times mercs that are left somewhere just didint use your companion slots, and people made tent and base traps like in your suggestion, so it was changed to current situation and i dont think its likely to go back once again :) (although i would want that)

I think it will be interesting to see base mercs having to get paid, although adding them to the terminal in some way for easy payment could be nice.

I don't like this. I think all types of followers should be much more dependent on their leader's presence/orders.

If their leader isn't around, they shouldn't be there either. And even if he is, they shouldn't be able to attack without his say so/their getting attacked first.

But it makes perfect sense. They are just hired thugs guarding the lands of their boss.

Gameplay-wise such feature is needed because at this moment alt-merc leaders are needed to defend base if there's a chance that unwanted visitors might arrive.

What everyone seems to forget is that if you could have base guards like militia, they would also be limited in numbers.

If you allowed 5 or so guards for a smaller base, and 10-15 guards for a bigger base, i cant really see a problem with this, since people aren't just stock piling 50 slaves or mercs by leaving them there, they're adding them just like they do to protect their towns, you -can- already have NPC's as part of your base, and also it would allow for better scripting, and not just buying a horde of mercs and telling them to kill everyone, you could actually tell them to guard the cars or storage areas of the base, and only attack people who get too close to them as a non-member.

It's been suggested.  I don't see the problem.  People make these "traps" in encounters and tents already anyways.

Thier Mercs. Their payed to do What their Payed to do. We tell them to stand all the time and guard and how to guard it. They should be alright with it (maybe a bit grumpy) Long as their payed. Its not like soldiers are always behind a leader in armys. If the leader tells him to sit and guard a place. They should do that right? It'd be wierd if everyone had to stay next to the General the whole time. They spread out and... sometimes sit and guard.

I'm not talking about what's plausible in terms of what you can pay people with guns to do. I just think allowing players to buy as many NPC auto-attack sentry guns as they can afford and then being allowed to dump them wherever they like does not make good gameplay; losing a fight because your opponents have set up a dozen alts worth of mercs is just awful.

I do not think mercs should be anywhere near as autonomous as they are.

This reminds me of Orphans packing Den full of combatslaves :D

But yeah if its only tents and bases and limited number i support NPC guards. +1

You know badger, if someone really sets they're mind to it, even if mercenaries were completely removed, if you can block/spoof a few IPs, and can get 3-4 game clients running at the same time + aimbots, you could still have a tent trap next to NCR, this suggestion actually makes it better to not just dump hordes of mercenaries on alts, but to add them as guards to a base, which could then be scripted and made smarter so you wouldn't have to tell them to insta kill people.
