Junkyard would be a location on worldmap, accessible for all. There could be many junkyards all over the desert or just coupple of big junkyards.
These places are full of wrecks, imagine a post war highway full of old cars, stuck in traffic jam when the bombs fell. These wrecks would provide regenerating junk, so the gathering source has a cooldown and provides mats independent of player's gathering cooldown. The ammount of junk received could vary and depend on player's skills like science.
Now here's the thrill: because everyone can enter those places and anyone can harvest, they would be sources of interest for everyone. Robbers and looters. You could fight or race over the junk because if someone gathers it, it's away from you. Players would get to choose whether to get additional junk from dangerous places or safely but slowly from junk dumpsters.
Similar areas could be for all raw materials.
