Den Theme Story
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:35:37 am »

I was doing some boring work and the Den theme started playing in my head and the images of the first time I was in the Den started to project in my mind so I decided I would just write a story about my first time view of the Den and its theme song to speed up time. These are just some of the ideas I managed to write in an hour so I hope you will enjoy the story for one my favourite tracks in the game as much as I enjoy listening to the track and feel free to comment.

This is a link to the theme song for the Den and Raiders: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aXTcFByVS8
The soundtrack is made by the talented Mark Morgan.

Den Theme Story

You emerge from the wastes tired and hungry from your long, physically and mentally taxing journey. In the distance you can hear what seems to be drums being played, a sad, dangerous and unforgiving tone. You come across a long rusty old fence; behind it you peer in and see rundown buildings and dazed people roaming around cluelessly. You take a few steps in past the broken gate hoping to find some food and water as well as a place to rest in this town if you could call it that. Already your first impression is that this place is dangerous and you hold your pistol closely.

You take a moment to survey the sight and your surroundings. You see little gangs minding their own business, guards standing beside buildings, small children standing by doorways wearing rags chatting amongst themselves. The town is filled with what seems like drug addicts babbling on about things that make no sense to you, they seem to be taking refuge in one of the damaged buildings using make shift beds to sleep in. You try to talk to one of the strangers and ask him where you could find some food but the man just stares blankly into space, hypnotised, muttering non sense.

As you are looking around something zooms by you, your pockets feel lighter, you quickly put your hands in your pocket and notice you can’t feel your caps anymore, you gaze up again and see a small figure running away quickly from you, your bag of caps in his hands. You chase after the thief running past clueless wanderers who don’t seem to notice your presence, past what seems to be a casino and catch up with what turns out to be a small child. You grab him by the arm and spin him around, peering into the boys sorry and frightened eyes, you feel the urge to punch the child but you can’t bring yourself to harm the poor stray kid and you let him go with the little caps you had, perhaps he will make better use of them than you would you think to yourself.

You take a moment to catch your breath and after all this running you realise you have arrived at another section of the town, to your left there is a building with a bar sign, to your right, a tall church catches your eye, guards wearing metal armour and wielding intimidating sledgehammers and guns patrol the church, you rather not mess with them and doubt that the church is being used for its original purpose, no longer a safe place. Trying to get a better view of the insides of the church through a window you see more men protecting some crates probably filled with illicit goods. One of the guards outside seems to have noticed you snooping around, a tall strong muscled man, his grip on his sledge hammer tightens as he raises it and stares you down, you think it would be best to move on and mind your own business and quickly scurry forward.

As you proceed you pass by the churches graveyard, many poorly built graves scatter the site, many of which have been dug up again after being laid to rest.  Soon, the smell of delicious food catches wind and you follow the smell in hopes of getting a refreshing meal.

While you are following the scent, you notice that the sound of drums get louder, a beat that fits the town perfectly is being played, you feel it describes its features very well as you move closer to the source of the sound you encounter the building from which the sound is emitting, a large heavily guarded building, perhaps ten or more men on the outside you count quickly, the men are holding guns and wear a mean expression on their face and look at you in disgust, you don’t want to know how many more of them are inside and choose not to get any closer for fear of your own safety. The sounds of crying people seem to be coming from behind the building as you move around to see and what you find shocks you. A variety of people captured and bound by ropes enclosed inside, many of them tribal’s who are trying to string words together pleading that they have done nothing wrong but they don’t understand that they are going to be bought and sold into slavery. Some tribal’s are huddled together in small groups chanting song in their own tongue as if praying. You hope that these slaves will one day be freed.

The mixture of these sounds truly emphasise what is going on around these parts of the wastes, this town, how the people are living, you know that you would never want to settle down in a place like this, thinking best that you should not linger here much longer, you turn your back and walk away, the image of that town does not leave your memory, the beat repeating in your head, this town has succumbed to the wastes.
